MadArt Alison Milliman first conceived of MadArt while living abroad for a year in Melbourne, Australia.

MadArt was a contemporary arts organization that supported artists in making new, installation-based works, while encouraging engagement with the creative process by remaining free and open to the public during all stages of exhibition development. While there, she discovered a lively street art scene filled with emerging artists, whose works were often hidden down alleys and in unusual parts of t

he city. In visiting these locations, her interest in emerging artists and the joy of finding art in unexpected places began to form the core of MadArt’s mission. Further inspiration was found one day when Milliman was visiting her local neighborhood shops and inside their storefront windows was a show of contemporary artwork sharing primary space with everyday retail objects. Immediately upon experiencing this unexpected visual encounter, MadArt was conceived. After returning to the States, Milliman fostered a keen desire to rethink how and where we view art in our communities, exploring the idea of creating opportunities to see artwork outside the familiar venues. With The Window Art Project in 2009, MadArt’s first show exhibited artwork in storefront windows in Madison Park, Seattle and Milliman’s mission to help people “discover art in unexpected ways” was realized.

Taking a moment to say our final goodbye.

We are beyond grateful for your support and appreciation over the years, from our early days of nomadic exhibitions around town, to the last decade in our South Lake Union studio. As our programming evolved over our 15 year tenure, we remained committed to our original mission of supporting artists in expanding their practices and sharing their work with the public. Thank you for helping us activate these installations and fortify our vibrant creative community.

As we move forward, we hope you will join us in viewing our closure as a portal of possibility, rather than a hole in our arts community. We are so excited to witness the continued expansion of Seattle’s creative spaces and events, and can’t wait for what’s to come. We hope that your memory of MadArt is fond and inspires you to see beyond what you previously thought possible.

Thank you and farewell!

Thank you to everyone who came out last week for the opening reception of our final studio exhibition, “MAD STUDIO”!

It was the perfect celebration of MadArt and 15 years of talented artists and we are happy to be wrapping up our story in such a positive light. As our most attended opening, the studio was bursting with energy and activated artworks. The night felt full of conversation, connection, and admiration, and so many amazing images have been coming through. Thank you for sharing your unique perspectives!

We are open Wednesday through Saturday through July 13! We highly recommend coming back to experience the exhibition as a whole, with space to fully take in the different rooms and works.

We are excited to announce the launch of a new program this year: MATERIALIZE. Featuring our usual Open Studio and Exhibition periods, this nomination-based program was created to specifically support artists who have not yet worked in large-scale installation as well as those who have historically been underrepresented in the arts. After collecting nominations from a wide range of local arts professionals, each artist will provide a proposal for their potential MadArt Studio exhibition which will then be reviewed by a three-person panel. The inaugural MATERIALIZE artist will be chosen this spring and Open Studio installation will begin in September, 2023. A special thank you to for their guidance in launching this program and willingness to host our application on submittable!

In alignment with our intent to expand access, priority in selection will be given to artists who identify as BIPOC, women, or LGBTQ+. The selected artist will be supported with project funding, educational courses related to their developing work, and guidance from MadArt staff and other arts professionals throughout the process.

We are looking forward to sharing more about the selection process as it unfolds, and we can’t wait to see who our next studio artist will be and what innovative work they will bring to life at MadArt Studio this fall. Stay tuned for updates!

We have been so inspired by MadArt exhibition, “Interstitial Volume”, which is the artist’s largest installation to date. But here are some examples of his prior work, to give you an idea of his massive range of forms and materials. Based in Seattle, Jackson-Spieker is a multidisciplinary artist and has worked with a span of material throughout his career, including glass, bronze, wood, fiber, neon, mylar, monofilament, and light. His sculptures and site-specific installations combine conflicting shapes and materials to elicit feelings of hyper-awareness and disorientation as one moves through the work. Transparent obstacles create division and fragmentation, which play with our vision and proprioception.

Jackson-Spieker’s linear and atmospheric works explore tension, perception, and environment, both from a personal, somatic (physical) lens, as well as a broader societal lens. How do we value the space around us, and how do our surroundings manipulate our experiences? How does our urban architecture, community, or environment shape our physical and mental health, and our relationship with our body? As we navigate the controlled spaces of “Interstitial Volume” we become aware of how we move, how we impact the world around us, and how it impacts us.

Jackson-Spieker recently completed his MFA at Alfred University (NY). He has exhibited work with the Seattle Center Sculpture Walk Project, SOIL Gallery, Wa Na Wari, and Method Gallery. He also teaches intermediate glass blowing and bronze casting at Pratt Fine Arts Center. You can learn more about his background and practice on his MadArt bio page, or his website (link in bio).
