Although surrounded by water, there is little freshwater available in the rocky and arid terrain of the BVIs. While residents rely on harvesting rain and well water, native plant species like the organ pipe cactus are acclimated to these conditions.

A fracture gives this outcrop the appearance of a sleeping giant. Once a mud, this billion year old deposit has undergone metamorphosis. It’s minerals have been reformed by pressure and heat, giving this Phyllite a banded appearance and lustrous sheen.

The confluence of the southeast fork and main trunk of the Kahlitna glacier rests 7,500 feet below the summit of Mt Hunter. Longitudinal crevasses form as the glacier expands laterally.

Happy fourth from the Atlantic Coast! These barrier islands are the remnant of beach front dune ridges. Their topographic high points isolated them from the mainland when seas rose following the last ice age, about 18,000 years ago.

At the northeastern extent of the Virgin Islands lies a geological paradox - the origins of granitic continental crust out at sea. The puzzling history of this area spans the past 125 million years, when the carribean plate began its eastward migration from the Pacific to the Atlantic between North and South America. Long-lived volcanoes 🌋 and plate subduction formed and recycled materials that gradually changed the composition of the underlying magma chamber. The result - granitic intrusions which now form the eroded backbone of this archipelago.

The saddle between Jungfrau and Mönch in the Bernese Alps hosts the Sphinx Observatory (est. 1937). Over the last 60 million years, this granitic gneiss was thrust upwards from the ongoing collision between the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, forming a suitable foundation for astronomical research.

At first glance, the Wupatki settlement seems an improbable landscape to support almost 725 years of Puebloan people and culture. Thinly bedded Triassic Moenkopi Sandstone proved a suitable building material in an otherwise geologically hostile landscape. After nearly 600 years of settlement (~500-1085 AD), the neighboring San Francisco volcanic field erupted and temporarily displaced the Wupatki community. Yet the same forces that caused them to leave, formed fertile soils allowing them to return to their land and thrive for another 140 years until the settlement was abandoned.

The treeline is a fascinating environment in any suitable mountain range. It represents the elevation at which environmental conditions preclude tree growth. In coastal BC this elevation is approximately 5,000 feet above sea level, beyond which lies a realm of moss, rock, snow, and ice. To learn why some trees survive where little else will, visit my portfolio “Earth” online (link in bio).

The outcrop at Devil’s Postpile is a near perfect representation of columnar basalt. Between 80,000 and 100,000 years ago, basaltic lava erupted and flowed into the present valley of the San Joaquin River (middle fork). The downhill progression of the lava flow was halted by glacial moraine, forming a massive lava lake. As the lava cooled and contracted, it formed hexagonal columns roughly perpendicular to the underlying ground surface. Curved columns indicate irregularities in lava composition and topography.

Patagonia is a land of variable scales. Rounded tussocks of alpine vegetation in the foreground mimic steeply dipping sedimentary foothills that pale in comparison to the grand metamorphic and igneous Paine Massif.

The ghost of Christmas past. In late 2016, wildfires scorched nearly 18,000 acres of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Dark gray slate of the 200 million y.o. Anakeesta Formation emerged from the once dense greenery of the Park.
