The spaces around us are telling stories! From living rooms to yards, city streets to forests, movie screens to even zoom BGs. It’s why I love environment design. I hope this post sparks some curiosity about the spaces we see on screen and off.

The Home of the Houseplants is a set design that’s at the heart of Adrift. I started with reportage sketchbook drawings, floor plan and architecture exploration, and then drew the space in isometric view with props and set dressing. The final step was to add color, texture callouts, and lighting scenarios.

It’s where we meet the cast of houseplant characters who show us how combatting climate change can start at home. I wanted the space to feel lived-in and reinforce who they are, while setting the stage for story beats with details like the varied light sources, range of plants, and puja shrine.

It’s a fun challenge to craft a space and figure out how each piece of it comes back to the question ‘What’s the story I’m trying to tell?’ Adrift is an original coming-of-age story about a leaf facing climate change, which I’m developing as a full vis dev package. Plenty more Adrift artwork to come!

Adrift is an original coming-of-age story that started when I noticed a leaf flying by the window and asked “Where did it come from? Where’s it going?” Since then the idea has grown into a full visual development package for a 2D animated story.

Environments are the heart of Adrift, so I wanted to start by sharing one of my favorites: the Home of the Houseplants. Props and set dressing were key to this set design! They can say a lot about who lives in a space. Within the set, the home puja shrine serves as a meeting space for the plant characters. The handcrafted mandir, idol statues, prasad thali, ghante bells, framed artwork, chai pot, patterned vases and more all reinforce the culture of the house’s inhabitants and the story of their environmental values.

I begin with sketches of real-life objects and reference inspo, then design shapes, color, lighting, texture and materials. Drawing turnarounds helps define proportion and style consistency, and orthographic views serve as a blueprint to be built in 3D. All my vis dev art decisions come back to story, and what info will help others in a production continue bringing the ideas to life!

Same plant (named Medusa) different days! Sometimes the act of painting feels like a bonus to just existing with one thing for awhile and noticing stuff about it.

Love painting from observation though, trying to understand how local colors change with time of day and weather, and choosing how to simplify/design shapes of light and shadow.

Made some (Ted) Lasso Tool character designs to celebrate Season 4! Digital painting pun, couldn’t resist 😅

Ted Lasso always makes me laugh or stop to think, and the characters are so iconic I thought they’d be perfect for a character design study.

One thing I enjoy about character design (and painting in general) is exploring how much personality or mood can be expressed through simple shapes and value. I like using the Lasso Tool in Photoshop (or any major painting software) to block in large graphic shapes, pushing and pulling proportions until the silhouette feels right.

Curious which character or stage of the process is your favorite? If you’re interested in the workflow or have any questions, I’d love to chat!

Spring Show 2026! Proud to be featured alongside such amazing artists and artwork and honored with awards in 2D layout design, Character Design, and Color Script. Means a lot being recognized by fellow artists and seeing that sort of progress marker. Congrats to everyone in the show! 🙌🏽

Each of these selections and more are displayed in full on the gallery show site which I’ll link to in my profile bio and story post.

Most of this art, including the digital color script and traditionally painted wood version, was created for my thesis story project ‘Adrift’. Looking forward to sharing more of that visual development process 🌱

To the family and friends who make this journey possible ♥️ I truly appreciate every opportunity, positive thought, word of encouragement, bit of advice, and all your support throughout. It means more than you may realize!

MFA in Visual Development - the art and design of feature film, tv series, games, animation and live-action.

Thank you to my instructors .carman and many more and the community of artists who guide me. Looking forward to sharing what I’ve learned with the artists out there as they’ve done for me, and to keep growing. Excited to post more of what I’ve created this past few years here as well. Just getting started!
