Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized Valve’s AI disclosure policy on Steam, calling it “irresponsible” and arguing that mandatory AI-use labels could put smaller developers at a disadvantage.
According to Sweeney, AI tools are becoming a standard part of game development, making the requirement to label AI-assisted games unnecessary.
“I think it’s really irresponsible of Valve. They shouldn’t do it, because it makes it much, much, much harder for a game developer to have a chance of success. You have to choose between not using tools that can make you far more productive, and likely falling behind competitors that do.”
Sweeney also warned that AI labels could make games easier targets for review-bombing campaigns, particularly those developed by smaller studios.
