The longtime feud between Damon Dash and Jay-Z just exploded again after Dash publicly responded to comments Jay-Z made during his headline-making freestyle performance at the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.
According to reports, Jay-Z used part of a surprise freestyle to take aim at several people from his past, including Dash, his former Roc-A-Fella Records business partner. During the performance, Jay-Z reportedly joked about Dash's financial struggles and suggested he was "down on his luck again," instantly sending hip-hop fans into a frenzy. The freestyle also included references to other high-profile figures such as Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Ye.
Dash didn't stay quiet for long.
In an interview released shortly afterward, Dash blasted the performance, calling it "terrible" and saying he felt embarrassed for Jay-Z. According to reports, Dash argued that the rapper he saw at Roots Picnic looked nothing like the version of Jay-Z he once worked alongside during the early Roc-A-Fella years. He also claimed that people continue bringing up his name because it generates attention and relevance.
One of the more surprising details was Dash's criticism of Jay-Z continuing to perform at age 56. According to reports, Dash suggested it was sad that Jay-Z still had to work at that stage of his life, while also taking shots at his appearance and new hairstyle.
The renewed feud comes more than two decades after the former partners split following major business disagreements surrounding Roc-A-Fella Records. Their relationship deteriorated after Def Jam acquired Roc-A-Fella in 2004 and Jay-Z became president of the label. Since then, both men have repeatedly exchanged public criticism over business, money, and legacy.
Now fans are once again debating one of hip-hop's most famous fallouts. With Jay-Z's freestyle going viral and Dash immediately firing back, the decades-old rivalry suddenly feels as active as ever.
