Class will begin with guided improvisational practices that examine relationships between curiosity, desire, strength, organizations of effort/force and ideology/aesthetics: practices of critical physicality!
Class materials shared are influenced by the work of Sara Shelton Mann, Shen Wei, Netta Yerushalmy, Arawana Hayashi, Deborah Hay and Faye Driscoll.
Critical to the class is an encounter with choreographed material. Alongside the challenge of learning and analyzing a predetermined sequence of movements, the practice of engaging set phrase material has broader implications: Can we approach the constraint of a choreographed passage as researchers – examining and questioning the physical and aesthetic forces that create the material? Ultimately, Phrase-work will be shared as a portal to play. Choreographed material will act as a set of coordinates that anchor an exploration of exaggeration and sensation. We’ll fall into and out of lush, decadent movement experiences.

SUSH is a Seattle-based DJ, writer, and dancer with a passion for global dance music. Known for her meticulously curated selection of groovy basslines and blends, she’s been a steady fixture on the local nightlife scene who’s set the tone sharing stages with the likes of Lorraine James, salute, Chez Damier, and Ash Lauryn.

What are you dreaming?
Extending a 10 year collaboration between Sara Shelton Mann and Jesse Zaritt, this work moves language, drawing and movement into increasingly urgent choreographic formations. We wonder how to dance into and out of the conditions conditioning us, how to source from the images arising from the eye of the heart. What possibilities of being with each other might we not yet be able to recognize, but be able to approach in our dancing, our dreaming together?
