Anna Macrae’s and Flora Ramirez-Bustamante’s work plays with ambiguities that reference interiority, accumulation, history, and humor. Whether through painting, vessels, or sculptural forms, each piece in this exhibition contributes to a broader, fragmented narrative—sometimes chaotic, always eclectic —that shapes the personal imaginary of these two European artists. Their work invites us into a lyrical and symbolic conversation with the domestic and the memories that are embedded within

… continuing my previos takeover, some of you asked about the materials I use to deconstruct.
… and I am thinking that my deconstructions are not always exactly physical or purposeful, but a long process happening overtime….

In my still life practice, I preserve the forms of vessels and vases as they emerge on the canvas. I translate these shapes onto paper, where they are archived and carried forward. While they may not remain within a single painting, they reappear across others, forming a continuous visual language….

… these paper forms are then cut into wood or plywood. I retain the offcuts—the remnants of each gesture—and work them further, primarily through sanding. Once painted, they become part of the installation, which brings together only a selection of these evolving forms, that include vases, sides of imaginary frames, handles…

The ceramic elements originate from my work in a ceramic studio. Like the wooden pieces, they are fragments of something unresolved, traces of an absent whole. I approach them as relics, recomposing them in a manner akin to an archaeological site, where meaning is assembled through fragments, absence, and time.

And

rather random images of vessels in different formats, on different times…

starting out… I moved from Madrid (Spain) to the Seattle area in February 2001. I was 41 and started working at an IT company for the first time after being at the university in Madrid for many years. I knew no one here. I thought this would help me build a more financially stable life.
I rented an apartment in Kirkland and started attending oil painting classes at the Kirkland Arts Center for many years.
My father was a painter and an art maker. From him, I was given permission to be fearless, audacious, resilient—an artist. I worked and painted alone for many years, and I also made wonderful friends.
And this is how I started painting and expanding my creative wonder as a maker: figurative art, abstract art, 3D objects.
🌀 Always—and continuously—making, practicing, painting, thinking, seeing art, reading art, beginning. 🌀

🏺I came across Betty Woodman many years ago through her daughter, Francesca Woodman. Betty was an American ceramic artist known for turning pottery into bold contemporary art. To me, she transformed ceramics into bold paintings.

Here is Betty in front of her Il Giardino Dipinto, 1993 (glazed earthenware, epoxy resin, lacquer, paint, 108 x 420 inches.)

I started deconstructing still lifes last year with this red vase on a pedestal (last picture.)

Her influence in my installation ✨The Vase Garden✨, now on view at Shift Gallery .seattle, is clear. My way is the other way around: I go from painting still lifes to deconstructing them—not only the objects that are represented, but also the object of still life itself: frame and descriptive elements, using the wall as a white canvas.
The Vase Garden, 2026. Plywood, wood, oils, ceramic, 5 feet.
