Welcome to this weeks Wominal creation that comes with some verbiage and visceral images.
CW* for images of self harm, food
Birthed out of Robin Lynn Smith’s Devising class, this video came as an exploration of our societies toxic obsession with sexualizing and abusing young women in the entertainment industry. There are too many to name, but recently Brittany Spears and Demi Lavato have bravely and openly come out about the abuse they have been, not silently, receiving. It’s important we listen and believe people.
The idealization paired with the destruction.
The dependency paired with the control.
The subliminal messages people receive from a young age.
The lack of a realistic, honest, represented dialogue.
Art has always persisted, resisted, existed to heal and hope, to bravely tell a story so history isn’t repeated.
That brings me to P***y Riot, a Russian feminist protest punk rock performance art group based in Moscow. We were introduced to them, their music, their revolution in a country where they were shut down and arrested for making a music video for their song RAGE. They were accused of making “gay propaganda” and detained while on set, their electricity was also cut.
Their song Straight Outta Va**na is featured in this weeks video.
Art is powerful.
Give this video a watch and join in on the conversation. How does it make you feel? Where does art bring truth and revolution in your life?
