Hey Black Seattle! Something that will always be true is that it is important for us to have spaces where we can honestly express ourselves. Spaces where access to a microphone isn’t gated behind who you know or how good you are at pitching yourself for gigs. Sometimes you just need welcoming places where you can approach the mic, share your he(ART) 🖤, and build connections that can lead to community.

That’s why I celebrate people who curate and host open mics with care. This week I have the honor of speaking with one such person - .taz_ . She is joining me to share about the new open mic experience she is presenting - THE LIVING ROOM - on May 1st at .

Join us! Ms. Taz and I want to hear from you - the performers of the region - about your thoughts on our local open mic scene. What takes an open mic from being simply a stage to becoming a true home for your creative practice that you love returning to over and over? Hop on live with us and share your thoughts.

Hey, Black Seattle! I’m coming back up for air after our big event earlier this month. ✨✨✨And I’m feeling recovered enough to get back to Wednesday Night Live! So let’s get it!

This week we’ll be in conversation with Olympia Edwards, the CEO of ! Join us - come share about your efforts to take up space in this world. That is the theme of their upcoming 5k Race on April 25th. We’ll hear all about why they’re chose that theme and learn about how you can get your girls involved in their programs. If you want to help young girls in the region find connection and confidence, this is the conversation for you.

And this 5k is the perfect way to get energized for spring. I am really looking forward to it! Who else is coming?! 👀🏃🏾‍♀️

Something I’ve learned about myself is that acknowledgment is very important to me. A big part of what is meant to do is help to put our people “on the record” in a place where folks are so quick to erase us. I realized just how deep this runs for me this week. One of my friends ( ) named me in the acknowledgements section of his new poetry book and I cried and cried like he handed me a stack of gold bricks. With that in mind, I want to take you all away from the stage lights and make sure to acknowledge some of the people whose contributions might easily go unsung, but they are vital to creating community events like this one. Please support them (hire & work with them). And join me and in giving them love in return for the love the brought to this Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted work!!!

We thank you!!

On April 4th, we gathered for Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted - a loving space for those of us across the African diaspora to connect, listen, and deepen understanding of our many Black experiences.

That day carries history.

It marked 58 years since the assassination of Dr. King - and the arrests of young activists here in Seattle whose resistance helped spark the Seattle chapter of the Black Panther Party.

It also marked 66 years of Senegalese independence - one of my ancestral homes.

From Senegal to Seattle and all the spaces in between, Black people deserve to be known and loved distinctly. Our histories -where we come from, where we’ve been, and even the places we’ve never been but carry within us -matter.

We need to learn ourselves and each other. This is how we remember who we are and resist being used as tools of our oppressors against our own people.

What happened in that room shifted perspective. Every person who left there inspired to ask new questions and live a little differently is a blessed seed planted anew in our community garden.

We’ll be sharing stories and reflections from this gathering over the months to come.

To everyone who showed up - thank you. And to those we didn’t get to hear from, your experience matters. We will keep making more space for our voices.

Grateful for the partnership with and Arts at King Street Station () and the entire village that made this possible (tagged in the comments). 🤎

Peace,

Hey, Black Seattle! We are back with a small sampling of our events calendar. We want to say a huge thank you to our premium members posting their events! The community has been extremely vocal about how grateful they are to have a central space to find events for us by us!

Also FYI! For those who want to share events they may have with the community not on a consistent basis, we are offering a one time event promotional service. This is great for organizations that may not be Black owned yet offer programming or events occasionally for our community!

The Black people you are looking for are right here….Every month we get about 15,000 page views on our website - that’s OUR people, looking for OUR things in the PNW.

So, that job posting, summer program, internship, scholarship, artist call, karaoke night, vendor market, etc…did you know you can easily promote it on our site?

We made it very accessible. $115 unlimited promo for a year. $9.99 for a month. Posting on social is good but gets lost in people’s feeds. Come promote on this hub that people go to that is for us, about us, by us! http://Heyblackseattle.com/join

Hey Black Seattle! We are less than a week out from Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted - a Black Community gathering that creates space for us to grow understanding across Black experiences. We are looking forward to seeing all who will gather on 4/4!

Thank you to the community members who sat down with us to share a bit of their Black Seattle perspectives in this clip. .seattle and 🙏🏾🪴 Learning about what it was like to grow up here, thinking about what it might be like to arrive here during a quarantine, hearing about the ways others have built their network…this video is just scratching the surface of the many things we can learn from each other.

This April 4th edition of Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted is sold out and the packed wait list lets us know we’ve touched on something people really want to experience. We hope to be able to create this kind of space again, but it requires aligned community partnerships and support from sponsors. If you are interested in supporting this kind of community building work, please send an email using the email button on our IG profile.

Hey Black Seattle! We hear people say all the time that “Black is not a monolith.” BUT…how much care and consideration do you hold for Black experiences outside of your own? Let’s talk about it! Hop on IG Live with me on Wednesday 3/25 to share about your experience being in Seattle and experiencing Black cultural norms that are different from how you were raised. Or come share about the customs that you have made sure to bring with you from your upbringing. Join me!! I’m looking forward to the discussion!

This feels like a perfect prelude to our upcoming event on 4/4 - Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted - where we are creating space for a conversation to build understanding across the African diaspora here in the Seattle area. General Admission tickets are sold out, but we do have a few spaces reserved for sponsors who join us in this work. Opportunities for sponsorship are linked in our bio.

We want to acknowledge the incredible artists who will be a part of the Freshly Planted / Deeply Rooted experience. From poetry to live painting, to the exhibits that will surround us - their work helps shape the energy in the space and we are so grateful for their gifts. Sending much love to:

Our community is strongest when deeply rooted families and newly planted folks build together.

Freshly Planted, Deeply Rooted isn’t focused on erasing differences – we’re cultivating fertile ground where building strength across those differences becomes our garden.

We’re truly stronger when we show up and grow together.

From our cross-cultural traditions to our shared dreams for the next generation, we carry seeds of resilience and when we tend to them collectively, something lasting takes root.

Join us on April 4 as we tend to our collective garden.

Thank you to all the storytellers and space holders who will join us there. Let’s show them some love. 💚🪴

Space is limited. Attendance is free with RSVP. Link in the comments.
