At 85 dB, you can mix or listen safely for about 8 hours. But the clock isn't linear: every +3 dB cuts that safe time in half. So 88 dB gives you 4 hours, 91 gives you 2, and by 100 dB you're down to about 15 minutes. Push to 115 dB and damage can begin in under 30 seconds.
The catch is that loud doesn't feel dangerous in the moment. It just feels good, the same way a hotter master seems "better" until you level-match it. But hearing damage is cumulative and permanent, and your ears are the one piece of gear you can't replace or recalibrate.
Protect them like the tools they are: turn the level down when you can, take breaks, and reference at conversation level. Quieter, longer-lasting ears are what let you keep making records that translate, and keep making them for decades.

At native loudness, a master always seems louder, and louder almost always sounds "better" to our ears. But it's not a fair comparison. The best way to compare is (using lossless files), match both to −14 LUFS, the loudness most streaming services play them back at. Now you're actually hearing the mastering and not just a volume boost.
When level-matched, the difference is clear: the master stays fuller yet balanced, while the mix's peaks would clip. Which is the whole idea: translation, control, and records that last.

My rates, process instructions, and deliverables. Mastering shouldn’t be mysterious! If your mastering engineer doesn’t list their rates publicly, it’s not because they “tailor the work for each person” and need more information to provide a quote for an average-length song — it’s because they’re filtering clients to see if and when they can charge a premium.
In my opinion, every song deserves the same, affordable treatment whether it’s an indie debut record or a Billboard single.

Growing up, a big part of my vision of America was formed through great yankee songwriters. The way Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and so many others wrote their story-songs left a lasting impact. To work with someone who genuinely deserves to be mentioned in those ranks—carrying that same legacy forward—is both a privilege and a pleasure.
