We are beyond thrilled to announce Mikaela Shafer as the Store’s Alcove Artist for the upcoming Fall/Winter season.✨

Mikaela is an Indigenous mother, visual artist, poet, curator and community builder residing in Olympia, Washington. In addition to her own dedicated artistic practice, Mikaela empowers her community through thoughtfully crafted storytelling, emphasizing the work of fellow Indigenous makers in the region. She’s the Lead Storyteller for Indigenous Creatives Collective, Co-Chair of the Downtown Olympia Creative District, Marketing Lead for the Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the founder of MAQA Collective.

Mikaela’s original commission for the Frye Store will be on view starting October 24. Be sure to check out “Temporal: Stories of Indigenous Present, Re-imagining Indigenous Futures,” the show she curated at Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts before then to see her creative work in action!

Our summer Alcove Artist lexa toledo villanueva (she/her) is a q***r Filipina-American mixed-media artist, tarot practitioner and mother. She is the creator of the Future Ancestor Tarot deck (currently stocked in the Store!) and lexa luna studio, a place where her creative practices converge. Her work investigates the magic found in motherhood, ritual, dreams, and cycles.

Drawing from her recent travels to Cavite, Philippines, lexa’s work for the Store Alcove added a lush splash of color to our space this season, and evoked elements of belonging, cultural specificity and home. We’veabsolutely loved hosting “From Cavite With Love” in the Store all summer, and if you haven’t come to see ityet, this weekend is your last chance before it makes its way to its new home.

Thank you for sharing your magic with the Store, lexa toledo villanueva ✨

We’ve loved hosting amazing work by Pratt Fine Arts Center artists on our shelves this summer, bringing one-of-a-kind glass, wood, broomcraft and more to the Store for the very first time. Pratt is such a special place, and the artists who teach and create there definitely help make it so.

With a new exhibition season right around the corner, big changes are coming to the Store, and this is the last chance you’ll have to see these incredible pieces together in one place. Come celebrate Seattle’s talented maker community one last time as “In Community: Pratt Fine Arts Center” comes to a close this weekend. 🎉

Our visitors 🧡 Mary Quinn and we do too! We first welcomed Mary Quinn to the Store back in June as part of our special collaboration with Pratt Fine Arts Center. Since then, we haven’t been able to keep her work on the shelf – her brightly colored bowls are just so special!

Mary Quinn is a Seattle-based glass and print artist inspired by the natural world, especially insects and their ecosystems. Her work uses humor to explore human relationships and our place within nature, as focuses on learning through the creation process. Come in and check out her work in the Store, while supplies last!

Kulla Jatani is a celebrated Seattle-based maker of handcrafted jewelry with over fifteen years of experience. Drawn to the simplicity and uniqueness of jewelry design, Kulla believes that crafting jewelry should empower both the wearer and the maker, and each piece she makes reflects her personal style and commitment to quality. She shares her passion for art and adornment in each new jewelry design she creates, and as an instructor at Pratt Fine Arts Center.

We’re so excited to highlight some of Kulla’s gorgeous work in the Store as part of our special project, “In Community: Pratt Fine Arts Center.” Come shop her beautiful rings and earrings while supplies last! ✨

Sue Kim and Zeke Spier of Saze Glass are partners in life and art. Based in Burien, WA, the pair transitioned out of demanding careers during the pandemic, built a home flameworking studio and never looked back.

We first welcomed Saze to the Store in June as part of our collaboration with Pratt Fine Arts Center and got a closer glimpse into their process during a visit to their home studio this summer. Store assistant manager cece if you please had a blast touring their space and chatting with Zeke and Sue about the tight-knit Seattle glass community, what it’s like working in the hot shop, and the joy and wonder that glass art inspires. Read more about this talented duo on the Frye Art Museum blog, link in bio. 🔗
