Two Seaside High School students present Pacifica Project

SEASIDE — Two Seaside High School students couldn’t get enough theater with the two school productions, so for their Pacifica Project, they decided to revive the beloved “Macbeth: The Western.” Senior Luke Surber and junior Ethan Taylor rallied their fellow theater enthusiasts and will present an entirely student-driven production. They extend a warm welcome to y’all to come have a lot of fun while helping to raise funds for the arts programs at SHS. Surber is producer/director, and Taylor is co-producer.

“Macbeth: The Western” is a satirical comedy based upon Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth.” This Western version closely follows the original play, but instead of Scotland, it is set in the Old West. In lieu of kings and thanes there are cattle barons and ranch foremen. Three saloon girls plot the spiritual demise of Macbeth, telling a fortune of mixed truths and lies. Macbeth is the ranch foreman, but they name him “soon to be right hand man, and cattle baron thereafter.” After a daring shootout, Macbeth is named right hand man by the cattle baron, Duncan. However, when the time comes to name the new cattle baron, Duncan chooses his son, Malcolm. Thus, encouraged by his overbearing wife, Macbeth begins his steady spiral downward.

The script was re-written by former Seaside High School students Michelle Peterson and Allison Barker in 2006 as their Pacifica Project. Converting the script from Elizabethan to Western was a four-month process. It contains many comedic moments and allusions to other westerns. The play also includes famous soliloquies from the original play. Peterson and Barker re-wrote the play under the mentorship of former SHS English instructor Chris Gilde.

The entire cast is comprised of student volunteers from Seaside High School. Joseph Harkins plays Macbeth, and Kara Ipson is Lady Macbeth. Other cast members include: Surber, Taylor, Jake Malone, Phoenix Miller, Chasity Cozzitorto, Logan Griffin, Annie Stafford, Isabella Curcin, Sabrina Anderson, Bekah Cox, Jordan Davis, and Ryanne Sunnell. Cox is the costumer, and Surber put the set together.

There will be two performances at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 14 and 15 at Seaside High School. Tickets are $5 at the door; doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The Gresham Little Theater's Rejuvenation Show,
MacBeth, the Western!

An original adaptation following Shakespeare’s plot lines and adding twangy melodramatic fun along the way.

The play was adapted by Allison Barker and Michelle Johnson for their Seaside High School Senior project. We think they did a bang-up job (pun intended), and invite you come check it out for yerself! Our cast ranges in age from 5 to 80-sumthin', and we all take our characters very very very not-so-seriously.

Our performances are limited, however, our possibilities are endless. We can take this show on the road!

The entire cast is made up of student volunteers from Seaside High School. The play calls for many male roles. Several talented actresses have stood out, put their hair up, and are playing men. The cast includes Shaunna Agalzoff, Mina Beckman, Rodrigo Campos, Peter Chapman, Amanda Cochran, Anne Dennon, Moira Ferry, Donovan Gregory, Molly Hinsvark, Beth Jolly, Elaine Kloss, Audrey Lewis, Leo Luna, Kye McCord, Hannah Miles, Sydney Morrisson, Brittany Newton, Nana Pease, Aurelia Preston, Selina Red Bird and Michael Thompson, who plays the role of Macbeth.

The proceeds will be donated to the Elliott Hearing Memorial Scholarship and to the arts programs at Seaside High School. This is the Pacifica Project of Michelle Peterson, Allison Barker, Margaret Hinsvark and Michael Thompson.

Performance times are 7 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17, at Seaside High School, 1901 Holladay Drive. Admission is $5 and donations are welcome and appreciated. Tickets are available at the door and the box office opens at 6:30 p.m.
