This pitcher made by Bruce Gholson of Bulldog Pottery has a quiet wintery aspect to its surface with the oak leaf images floating on a mottled white and grey matte ground.
The glaze on this pitcher was applied a bit too thick back in 1999, which was before we took specific gravity readings of our glazes to get the surface we are after. It is a success though, a good example of a mistake turning into something more than the intention.

Drying pots on New Year’s Eve.
From Kyle....
“It’s been a challenge to find motivation to get in the studio this past week. I just want to hang with family and puppies and be lazy. But the calendar doesn’t lie, and I have to work towards a few upcoming deadlines. Just stepping in the studio usually gets the ball rolling. Was it Woody Allen that said, ‘80% of life is just showing up.’?
🤔or was it 90%? Ha! Anyway, I hope you and your families are safe and healthy. We appreciate you following . Peace and love. Stay safe and healthy.”

One of Samantha’s favorite forms to throw are covered jars. This triple dot patterned covered jar made by Samantha Henneke of Bulldog Pottery is 10” tall by 8.25” wide. The pattern is purposefully kept from becoming static by resisting the tendency to fall into rhythmic lines and grids. Because of this, the lines often lead the eyes to shift readily rather than staying linearly within the expected diagonals of the grid.

This barrel pitcher is a collaborative piece by Bulldog Pottery. Samantha has decorated this pitcher with her trademark, intensively dotted patterning of a white glaze applied under an overall application of a sensually waxy satin matte glaze. Even the bottom of this piece is glazed and fired on shells in the kiln. Bruce threw the component parts from a white smooth stoneware, then altered and reassembled them into a horizontal pitcher form which is surprisingly ergonomic and functional. It works especially well because it can easily fit in the refrigerator with its lower profile.

This vertical small serving bowl made by Bruce Gholson seemed ideal for decorating with a couple of fossil fish, slip trailed on its’ outside wall. The glaze dripping down from the rim is an aventurine and runs through an iridescent golden molybdenum crystalline glaze before streaking into and around the fish fossils. Bruce threw this bowl using cone 6 NC wild red clay.

Our Story

Show & Sale of Contemporary Art Pottery in Seagrove & Bakersville, NC. At Bulldog Pottery-weekend after Memorial Day & Michael Kline Pottery-Labor Day Weekend.

The Cousins in Clay is a collaborative pottery adventure started in 2008 by Bruce Gholson, Samantha Henneke, and Michael Kline. Each year we invite some of our pottery kin from far and wide for a pottery rich weekend that includes a whole lot of our best pottery, awesome fresh food and beverage, and of course we demonstrate how we make pots! In 2019 Courtney Martin and Kyle Carpenter joined Michael to host the sale in Bakersville, NC.

The name of "Cousins in Clay" is attributed to Michael who referred to a visit to his “clay cousins” Bruce and Samantha in Seagrove, on his blog Sawdust and Dirt. After the cousin reference in his blog, Bruce and Samantha invited Michael to participate in their first Bulldog Pottery Studio Art sale, and titled it “Cousins in Clay”.

Cousins in Clay is a biannual event. The weekend after Memorial Day, Bruce and Samantha host Cousins in Clay at Bulldog Pottery in Seagrove, NC and every Labor Day weekend Michael, Courtney and Kyle host at Kline Pottery in Bakersville, NC. Each event includes nationally recognized guest potters. We recognize that clay artists all over the world are related to one another through the common bond of clay. We are one big extended family of cousins in clay!
