This painting is called Depression — the first piece my dad, Leroy P. Elie, created after losing the love of his life… my mom.

They were married for 44 years, and their bond was something I always looked up to — a deep, unwavering kind of love that’s rare and beautiful.

This painting holds so much emotion. It’s raw, honest, and heavy with grief. But it’s also a reflection of how deeply he loved her. Art became his way of processing what words couldn’t express.

Depression isn’t just a painting. It’s the beginning of life after loss.
