Joseph Lonewolf (1932-2014), Santa Clara, was known for his miniature clay “pottery jewels”. This bowl is from 1974 and it combines a red polished surface with a green clay background. The piece is published in his book, “The Pottery Jewels of Joseph Lonewolf”. It is always exciting when we see a piece of his work that was published. Chris Youngblood (Santa Clara) and Jennifer Tafoya (Santa Clara) have been collaborating on their work for the past several years. This recent jar has carved Weedy Sea Dragons (a type of seahorse). They are polished, the jar was traditionally fired, and then Jennifer etched the surface of the clay and added clay slips. It is a creative jar with amazing detail and precision. Rochelle Jewel Medlock (Santa Clara Pueblo) is the daughter of noted potter Autumn Borts-Medlock. This square jar is a complicated shape with carving on all four sides! The red areas are polished and the clay areas are matte. The four sides create an elegant story of rain, water, and flowers. Note all the small carved areas! Jared Tso (Dine) brought a new fold to Native pottery with is flowing blanket series. Each piece was made with native clay, coil-built, and traditionally fired. “Youngest Brother” and “Middle Brother” wrapped the clay to create a jar with a blanket-like appearance. “Blanket of Night” created dynamic motion of a blanket falling through the air. Russell Sanchez (San Ildefonso) has returned to his firing roots with new pieces that are each high fired to a silvery gunmetal shine. The coloration is striking and part of a risky firing process.
