The 50 Governor Challenge

If I were President of the United States, I would issue a direct and urgent challenge to every governor of our 50 states: within two weeks, develop a comprehensive plan to stop school shootings. We need solutions, not speeches, and if these solutions are not on my desk by the deadline, I would require every governor to meet with me and the parents of children lost to these tragic and preventable acts of violence. We are facing an epidemic of gun violence in our schools, but it is a challenge we have the power to stop. This isn’t an issue of left or right, but an issue of life or death.
School shootings tear at the fabric of our communities. Every time another student is gunned down in a place where they should be learning, we are reminded that we have failed in our basic duty to protect our children. The ripple effects of these tragedies extend far beyond the lives lost students are traumatized, educators are overwhelmed, and parents live in fear every time they send their children to school. We are losing a generation of students, not only to violence but to the paralyzing anxiety that comes with living under its threat. Before I give my son a cell phone I'm going to go through this book with him. Then at least I know I did my best to give this confidence, a strong body, a strong mind, a sense of right and wrong, a he will know he was created for a purpose. He will know he is loved. He will know what a man is supposed to be. No matter what I do as a father, I know I'll look back and wish I had done more, but at least I can commit to this.
