The ESYO family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of Joseph Gumpper, beloved conductor of ESYO’s String Orchestra, longtime Shenendehowa music educator, and treasured member of the Capital Region music community. Joe joined ESYO in 2008 and, for nearly two decades, brought extraordinary warmth, musicianship--and lots of humor--to generations of young musicians. A violinist by training and a graduate of the Crane School of Music and the College of Saint Rose, Joe spent his career sharing his love of music through teaching, mentoring, conducting, and performing.

For so many within ESYO, Joe was far more than a conductor. He was a steady and compassionate presence, someone who made students feel seen, valued, and capable of more than they imagined. His impact on this community is immeasurable. At this time, we are holding Joe’s family, friends, students, colleagues, and the entire Shen and ESYO communities in our thoughts. This loss is incredibly difficult to process, and he will be deeply missed.
