The Trickster Cultural Center is a registered nonprofit 501c3 Native American and community arts center that also serves Native American veterans and their needs. The Center features contemporary Native American art (post-1960's) and augments its multicultural exhibits with featured speakers, panel discussions, school tours, and educator workshops. Come to Trickster to learn about Native American

culture, Native peoples and their contributions to the U.S. military, view veteran's artwork, experience multicultural exhibits, and browse unique items in the gift shop. Trickster Cultural Center was established on March 5th, 2005 to create a unique contemporary view of Native arts, cultural education, and awareness. Today the Trickster Cultural Center is the only Native American owned and operated arts institution in the state of Illinois.

Substance Use Disorders disproportionately impact Native communities. In 2021, 27.6% of American Indian and Alaska Native people age 12 and older had a Substance Use Disorder, compared to:
▪️ 17.2% of Black people
▪️ 17.0% of White people
▪️ 15.7% of Hispanic people
▪️ 8.0% of Asian people
Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community. Together, we can promote awareness, harm reduction, recovery, and compassion.
Let's honor those we've lost, support those in recovery, and help prevent overdose deaths through education and access to lifesaving resources.

FAHSCFilipino Nurses Exhibit Travels to Trickster Center in Schaumburg, IL

SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago (FAHSC) is proud to announce the “Unheard Voices of Care: Filipino Nurses in America” exhibit will be traveling to the Trickster Cultural Center, 190 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, Illinois, opening to the public on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and closing on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

In addition to the nursing exhibit, organizers will also dedicate a section of the gallery space to FAHSC’s “40 Years of Stories and History,” a look back at the stories, events, archival photos, material and film of FAHSC from its start in 1986 to the present.

To bring the exhibit to life, organizers will host a community gathering to tell the stories of area nurses, as well as a gala and closing reception to honor FAHSC on its 40th anniversary. Here’s more information on the upcoming events:

Media Day: Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, from 3-5 p.m. Organizers will host local press members to help publicize the month-long residency at the Trickster Cultural Center.
“Stories of Nurses” Lecture and Community Gathering: Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, from Noon – 2 p.m. at the Trickster Cultural Center. Admission is free.

International Overdose Awareness Day | August 31
On International Overdose Awareness Day, we honor those we have lost, support those affected by substance use, and raise awareness about overdose prevention.

📊 American Indian and Alaska Native communities are disproportionately affected by overdose deaths. In 2020, American Indian and Alaska Native people experienced the highest overdose death rates in both:
▪️ Urban counties: 44.3 per 100,000 people
▪️ Rural counties: 39.8 per 100,000 people
These rates surpassed all other racial and ethnic groups, highlighting the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and access to life-saving resources.
Together, we can reduce stigma, support recovery, and help save lives.

The impact of overdose continues to be felt across Native communities. In 2023, non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native people experienced the highest overdose death rate of any racial or ethnic group in the U.S. at 70.4 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to the overall U.S. rate of 33.5 per 100,000.
