Joe Negri was such a talent. Fred Rogers, a musician and composer himself, always shared the highest quality music with children because he knew kids have the ability to respond aesthetically. Although he presented ideas simply, he never promoted the cheap or superficial in music (or in anything else).
Saddened to hear about the passing of Neighborhood icon Joe Negri.
Mr. Negri was one of the many extraordinary talents who helped make Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood such a special place. As a world-class jazz guitarist, he possessed the kind of musical ability that could have commanded the spotlight at any moment. Yet, true to the spirit of the Neighborhood, he used his gifts not to draw attention to himself, but to support the stories, lessons and people around him. For decades, generations of children welcomed Handyman Negri into their homes, making him an enduring and beloved part of the Neighborhood family.
I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Negri a few years ago while gathering content for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood: A Visual History. Despite his remarkable accomplishments and reputation as a musician, he spoke about the Neighborhood with the same humility and purpose that defined the program itself. Like so many of his fellow Neighbors, he saw his role as one of encouragement and affirmation for young viewers.
As Mr. Negri said to me at that time, “[The Neighborhood taught viewers] that every one of us has a unique personality and that we’re all valuable and we’re all important.” It was very clear to me that this simple but powerful message was one lived out by Mr. Negri in his day-to-day interactions, both inside and outside Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
My heartfelt condolences to Joe Negri’s family, friends, colleagues and the countless fans whose lives he touched.
