Last year marked the centennial of Yasushi Akutagawa ( #芥川也寸志 ), and I dedicated the season to bringing as many of his works to the concert stage as possible—along with featuring his legacy on my NHK-FM radio show. It was a personal promise I made to his wife, Masumi-san, and standardizing his incredible voice for audiences today has been an honor.
I am thrilled to share the release of our newest album with my dear musical family, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra! The record features Akutagawa’s Symphony No. 1 paired alongside Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Shostakovich was a massive influence on Akutagawa, and the two met several times in Moscow during the 1950s.
I hope listeners can hear that profound Russian influence weaving through Akutagawa’s symphony. Out now on all major streaming platforms! 🎶💿

Making music for everyone is very important to us here at your SavPhil & we're so happy to see members of our wonderful chorus have been busy this summer doing just that!

Jade Aviste (Soprano): This off-season, I have been serving as the primary director and developer for the Savannah Renaissance: Battle of the Bands, a massive civic and creative movement launching in the city.

The project features a highly disciplined 5-month incubator track for local talent, a major tournament structure boasting a significant baseline cash prize pool, a front-row international guest judging panel, and a strict requirement where every advancing modern band must natively integrate classical network musicians and vocalists into their live sets.

I am focusing heavily on bridging our local classical network directly into grassroots community spaces to create a unified, cross-genre musical ecosystem for the city.

As summer winds down & Savannah kids head back to school, we want to spotlight one of the AMAZING music educators we have in the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra!

Regina Helcher Yost (Flute II / Piccolo): In June, I taught private flute lessons and flute choir at the 2026 Charleston Southern University Summer Music Camp (there were 49 flutists this summer!). I also performed an all chamber music concert celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the ISA with Chamber Music Charleston. For 3 weeks in July, I performed and toured Europe with the Charleston Southern University Music School.

In August, I’m performing and adjudicating a national piccolo competition at the National Flute Association Convention in Portland, Oregon. And in August and September, I will be performing a recital and giving a flute/piccolo masterclass at three universities (Utah State University, Tennessee Tech University, and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill).

My summer has been fantastic!

More summer fun & musical travels from members of your Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra!

Liz Crafton (Principal French Horn): I was fortunate to perform as Principal Horn with the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra. After the festival, I took a little vacation to Disney and happened to find a French horn pin, so of course I had to get it!

Sandra Nikolajevs (Principal Bassoon): I perform, teach, and coordinate student chamber music at the Luzerne Music Center in the Adirondacks. In addition, I do remote work for Chamber Music Charleston, a nonprofit organization that I run in Charleston, SC.

Members of your SavPhil Chorus continue to have the COOLEST summer plans! ☀️🎶

Jason Fuller (Bass): Working with The Caretta Research Project, a hands-on research, conservation and education program dedicated to studying and protecting loggerhead sea turtles.

Timothy Teeter (Bass): Teaching a seminar in Halle, Germany and getting in all the music I can. Here I am on the steps of the Bavarian National Theater in Munich for some free summer jazz on the steps.
