Do you know Dr. James McCune Smith?

Smith was the first African American medical doctor and the first to run a pharmacy in the United States. He was born into slavery in 1813 in New York and was later freed in 1827. Although he was born into slavery, he studied and graduated at the top of his classes. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in 1835, a Master's Degree in 1836, and a Medical Degree in 1837.

Dr. Smith was also a member of the American Anti-Slavery Society and helped Fredrick Douglas start the National Council of Colored People. He devoted much of his time to aiding slaves through the Underground Railroad. Fredrick Douglas said Smith was “the single most important influence on his life."

For 20 years Dr. Smith practiced at the Colored Orphan Asylum in Manhattan until it was burned down by a mob where 100 black people were killed. Fearing for his family’s safety, he moved his family to Brooklyn.

Dr. Smith lectured on race and abolitionism and wrote numerous articles to refute racist ideas about black capacities until his death in 1865.
