Acrylic gouache and colored pencils for my first I’m Alejandra Matiz, but you can know me as Matiba. I’m a Colombian illustrator and graphic designer living in Savannah, seeking representation! 🎨

I love expressive characters, vibrant palettes, and storytelling-driven illustrations. I’d love to create artwork for:
✨ Book covers
✨ Picture books
✨ Middle grade projects

I’ve illustrated some children’s books before and have had the opportunity to work with amazing clients around the world! 📩Say Hi at [email protected]

This piece is a reminder that fun work comes from sketchbooks ✨
This illustration became a story and a portfolio piece thanks to fearless exploration in my sketchbook.
It’s not easy to face a blank page when you’re surrounded by beautiful sketchbooks on Instagram, but once you try, it becomes your best tool for creating. 📔

🎨Even though my work is full of color, I've recently fallen in love with using graphite and charcoal. 🤩

I want to share this sequence of children’s illustrations I made about that in-between feeling that comes with growing up. ✨

Those everyday changes that seem small, but quietly shape us when we’re children.

This project was created for one of my classes and became a really lovely exploration of reconnecting with traditional techniques. I’m still exploring my narrative and visual language, but I’m happy to see the progress. 🌱

I feel honored to have my illustration “The Woman Destroyed,” inspired by the amazing book by Simone de Beauvoir, selected for SILA Illustration West 64, and deeply thankful to the and this year’s wonderful jury.

As a student finishing my MA in Illustration, this recognition feels especially meaningful. Being part of this show at this moment in my journey is something I truly cherish. 🫶✨

Out of more than 1,300 submissions from 411 artists across 35 countries, being chosen is incredibly humbling. I’m grateful to be included among such a talented and inspiring community.

I’m truly grateful to this year’s jury for the honor of considering my work:

SooJin Buzelli
Show chair
Christine Foltzer
David DePasquale
DJ Stout
James Ransome
Jeff Soto
Jessica Hische
Matt Mahurin
Miriam Martincic

It truly means a lot to have my work seen by you.

And a very special thank you to my professor Ryan Sanchez for his art direction and guidance in one of the classes where I grew the most as an illustrator. This recognition is also thanks to that experience ✨🙌

I created this sequence of illustrations to participate in the SCBWI Narrative Art Award ✨
The challenge was to tell a complete visual story using only three to four sequential images.

This year’s prompt was:
“Because this is the quarter-century mark since the Y2K scare, tell a story about something that turns out not to be a threat.”

Even though I didn’t win, I truly enjoyed the process. Exploring storytelling through images, pacing, and emotion reminded me why I love narrative illustration so much.
Excited to finally share it with you 💛

I haven’t shared much about this quarter, it’s been busy and pretty introspective….but I wanted to show you a project I developed in my Contextual Character Design class with Prof 💜 where I also had the chance to be a TA.
I adapted these characters for a book cover project, a reinterpretation of Hansel and Gretel.

Being a TA was such an inspiring experience: I learned so much and had the chance to see the work of incredibly talented students! ✨I absolutely loved this class; I feel like I grew a lot in how I draw and create characters through narrative and context. 🫶✨
