Nerd alert!
When meandering around the SAV, be sure to keep an eye out for these little southern gems, the Resurrection fern. Ferns reproduce via spores which find their way to a variety of surfaces but apparently they really love to take root on bricks which mimic rocky habitats found in the wild. What's extremely cool about these plants is they can lose up to 75% of their moisture during a dry spell (they'll literally shrivel up and look like they're dead) but once exposed to water again, BAM, they spring back to life. There are moments when I walk around historic Savannah which remind me of old European cities, especially when I come across aged and intricate lightning fixtures like this one. I'm pretty sure I'm an old soul from the 1940s. I love the clothing, architecture, music, movies and especially the cars of that time. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning!

Finials...comes from the Latin word finis, which means "end." The root of this decorative item dates all the way back to ancient times. It's one of those architectural details which has spanned across numerous cultures and centuries. Now, in researching this particular finial, I'm at a loss of what it's supposed to represent. Some sources state it's a pinecone, an artichoke or a pineapple. My guess would be pinecone. What do you think? It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning! 🌞🐓☕📸

Lions have been used for centuries in architectural design from ancient cities, temples and public buildings. The lion symbolizes strength, majesty, bravery and royalty. In this particular instance, these lions rest at the base of a wrought iron newel post leading up to one of the SAV's historic homes. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning! 🌞🐓☕📸

The style of Gothic Revival continues over to St. John's Episcopal Church; neighbor to the Green Meldrum mansion. This church was built in 1853 and the Green Meldrum house serves as the Parrish house. St John's Episcopal Church was built for the purpose of increasing the presence of its denomination in the colony of Georgia. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning!

One last detail shot of the Green Meldrim house. What I find interesting about this one is that traditionally, porch ceilings in the south are painted a color called Haint Blue. This is significant because it's believed that Haint Blue mimics the color of the sky or water which will ward off ghosts (or haints - a Gullah word) from entering a home. So does this mean that all ghosts are welcome here? Something to ponder before entering this historic structure. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning!

The overall beauty of the Green Meldrim house will draw you in as you walk by but be sure to spend some time looking at the finer details of this property. It is said that this home is one of the South's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The ornate iron work is my personal favorite. It wraps around three sides of the covered porch and the portico is also made out of cast iron. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning!

The Green-Meldrim house is a National Historic Landmark in the SAV (built in 1853). One of the major significant moments in history for this home is that it served as General Sherman's headquarters during the Civil War. St. John's Church is also on this property. Both of these beauties are open for private tours. It's Your Savannah Shot of the Day! Good morning!
