The Savannah African Art Museum holds a collection of over 1000 objects that hail from West and Central Africa. Prior to the Museum’s founding in late 2016 this collection formed over the last 30 years by Mr. Don Kole, a Savannah businessman, private collector, and founder of the Savannah African Art Museum. Kole’s collection of African art showcases a range of ceremonial and spiritual objects fro

m the 19th and 20th centuries made from ceramics, metal, and wood. These powerful objects hold origins throughout West and Central Africa, representing 22 countries and over 130 individual cultures and ethnic groups. The diverse range of objects represented bisects the entire continent of Africa spanning as far west as Guinea and as far east as Tanzania. Kole are still actively collecting works from West and Central Africa that serve the museum’s mission of education while continuing to fill in gaps within the collection itself. While no works are purchased physically in West and Central Africa by Mr. Kole, the Savannah African Art Museum works with two West African born United States citizens who negotiate with individual communities and cultural ethnic groups in Africa to obtain objects on a commissioned rate. This allows for the money used in purchasing of objects to return to the community to which they are native. The Savannah African Art Museum’s mission as a non-profit institution is to focus on the introduction and education on the art and culture of West and Central Africa. Our aim is to provide an engaging experience and to start conversations about the power, diversity, and spirituality of African Art to all audiences. Accessibility:

The building in which the museum is located is in the Victorian district in a historic home. The building has a special needs lift at our side door entrance, for guests who are in a wheelchair or experience limited mobility. We also have an elevator inside the museum for reaching the second floor.

Today a prince walked into our museum! 🤴🏿🇨🇩

We had the extraordinary honor of welcoming Prince Mikoom Yemaam of the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He came to Savannah carrying more than objects from his personal collection. He came carrying stories of family, history, culture, and his people.

Did you know these masks were craved by men to honor woman?👸🏿 🌍

These are the Pwo Mask ( also known as Pwevo). While often associated with the Chokwe people, these masks are shared across several neighboring cultures in Angola, the DRC, and Zambia. Male dancers wear them during rituals and their entire purpose is to celebrate female ancestors, motherhood and wisdom✨

The Ribbon Cutting of the Wei Gallery will occur at 6:00 pm. We invite you to explore two new galleries, The Liren Wei Collection and Roots and Rituals: Agriculture and Spirituality in the West African Interior, on April 30, 2026 from 5:30 pm to 8 pm.

The Liren Wei Collection is our newest permanent exhibition space curated by Kate Lacivita. Highlighting some of the most striking work from across West and Central Africa, the Liren Wei Collection presents unique art from distinct cultures, communities, and artists from across the African region.

The exhibition, Roots and Rituals: Agriculture and Spirituality in the West African Interior, delves into the agricultural practices and beliefs of a selection of people groups from Mali and Burkina Faso, showcasing how their spiritual and cultural traditions are deeply intertwined with farming techniques and the land itself.

Enjoy a night of art, food, and extraordinary cultures at the Savannah African Art Museum.
