Bach Ascending is delighted to welcome Demark Manigo to our Board of Directors!

A familiar and versatile presence in Savannah’s arts community, Demark is a dancer, teacher, gymnastics coach, and vocalist. Bach Ascending audiences may remember his memorable interpretive dance alongside cellist Wade Davis in Bach’s Cello Suites. He has also sung at the Bach Marathon and at various churches as a choral scholar.

Demark rounds out a remarkably talented board whose members bring experience from across Savannah’s music, visual arts, education, arts administration, business, and nonprofit communities. Together, this breadth of talent and perspective strengthens Bach Ascending as we enter our seventh season and continue expanding our place in Savannah’s cultural life.

We are excited to announce that Michelle Meece and Julia Tucker have joined the Bach Ascending Board of Directors! They will serve alongside newly appointed President Cathy Girardeau and Artistic Director Tom White as we continue to build an exciting future for Bach Ascending.

Michelle Meece is a Wisconsin native firmly planted in the Deep South. Having moved to Savannah 24 years ago to renovate and found the Savannah Theatre project, she now proudly calls Savannah home. Michelle holds a B.A. in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She runs The Savannah Voice Studio and is thrilled to be a part of Bach Ascending!

Julia Tucker is Director of Music at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Skidaway Island and has been a Savannah resident since 2021. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Organ Performance from Arizona State University, where she studied with Kimberly Marshall. She also earned a Master of Organ Performance and a Master of Piano Performance from Syracuse University, where she studied with Annie Laver, as well as an undergraduate degree from Auburn University. An Alabama native, Julia maintains an active national and international performing schedule as an organist, collaborative pianist, and choral singer. She currently serves as Dean of the Savannah Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is delighted to join the Board of Bach Ascending. She is thrilled about the exciting future of the series!

Cathy Lee Girardeau Named President of Bach Ascending for 2026-2027.

Cathy Girardeau has been elected by the Board of Directors as President of Bach Ascending. She has served on the Board since 2022, including as Secretary, supporting the organization's growth and mission during an important season of transition and expansion. Cathy succeeds Margo Jones whose term expired.

Cathy's connection to Bach Ascending is also deeply personal. She first knew founder Mark Berry through the church where they both grew up, where Mark's father served as pastor. After losing touch for many years, they reconnected through Facebook when Cathy shared a cherished wedding photograph officiated by Pastor Berry.

Soon afterward, they made the remarkable discovery that they were both living in Savannah. Their weekly lunches rekindled a lifelong friendship and gave Cathy a firsthand appreciation for Mark's passion, vision, and entrepreneurial spirit. Invited to join the Board in 2022, she is privileged to help carry forward the mission and legacy he so thoughtfully established.

Annual Bach Ascending Donor Reception
