Shop print of the day: “Mark of the Devil, sick bag.” 1972

Today’s print is quite an odd piece! This piece of ephemera is a vomit bag branded for the 1970 film ‘Mark of the Devil’. The film was rated V for Violence and notoriously required all viewers to have their own sick bag in order to view the film. This grotesque requirement was part of a marketing scheme to drive box office sales, firmly presenting the movie as an ‘Exploitation Film’ and driving the film to success. This historical piece is set in 17th century Austria and depicts several grotesque torture and ex*****on scenes of suspected witches.

Shop prints of the day: “U.S. Pacific Railroad Expedition & Surveys.” 1853

Today’s prints are a collection of foliage, mammal, and fossil plates illustrated during the 1853-1855 railroad surveys, ordered by the secretary of war, Jefferson Davis and headed by William H. Emory. These surveys were conducted to find the optimal route for the American transcontinental railroad, in the process of finding this route they catalogued data from around 400,000 square miles of the American West. Presented above are wild primroses, wild asters, moles, shrews, fossilized shells and petrified wood.

Shop print of the of the day: “Eridanus Orion Lepus Star Chart” 1753

Today’s print is a rare star chart by John Flamstead, the first royal astronomer of Charles II of Greenwich. His role as the royal astronomer was to observe and chart the stars in Greenwich’s night sky to create a collected atlas. By the time his charts were first published in 1729 he had already passed, this particular star chart prominently features Orion and Lepus drawn by Sir James Thornhill.
