September at Headlands!

Thursday the 10th, join us in the Mess Hall for Supper — a seasonal, family-style meal, followed by a studio visit with 2026-27 Tournesol Awardee L. Song Wu and a reading by Summer AIR Eirinie Carson.

Starting the 20th, two new Project Space studios open: Aleksandra Walaszek & Sam Stevens, exploring what “invasive” and “native” really mean in the landscape around us, and Scott Snibbe, bringing Hidden Geometries — an immersive meditation environment grown from 25+ years of Buddhist practice. Both free and open to the public: Thursday-Sunday 12-5PM.

And on the 27th, alumni Graduate Fellow Josephine Devanbu leads ‘Sculpting Landscapes of Desire’, a workshop turning a mountain of reclaimed foam into a shared sculpture and performance.

The Director of Development will work with a motivated and inspiring team of fundraising experts to lead Headlands’ annual fundraising strategy. From producing our annual auction to building meaningful relationships with our major supporters and artists, this role will look different each day and is a critical part of the Headlands community.

Headlands’ Kitchen will be preparing a delicious, seasonal, family-style meal for us in the Mess Hall. After dinner, we’ll head upstairs for a studio visit with
L. Song Wu, our 2026-27 Tournesol Awardee, whose work mines anime and internet culture to explore spectatorship and identity — followed by a reading from Eirinie Carson, 2026 Summer Artist in Residence, from her forthcoming third book ‘One Last Thing’ on inheritance, migration, and memory.

This summer, we’re enjoying the company of another incredible group of Artists in Residence, now settling into the second half of the season.

Amanda Valdez, this year’s Henderson Awardee, joining us from New York, merges painting with textile-based processes — weaving, dyeing, and embroidery — to translate embodied knowledge into hybrid, sculptural paintings; Jay Carlon weaves his Filipino heritage and q***r identity into dance, film, and site-responsive performance, researching Filipino street festival rituals through a diasporic, post-colonial lens; Erica Mahinay, our Chiaro Awardee, is developing a new series of large-scale paintings built through touch, revision, and slow layering, letting the Marin light and landscape shape her palette in real time. In 2026, 62 artists will participate in fully sponsored residencies, gaining a rare opportunity to live and work in the Marin Headlands as they develop varied projects that can shape culture far beyond our campus.

“Transformation isn’t linear — a simple seed becomes a dense fractal of branches and leaves as time marches on.” - curator Shirin Makaremi

Over the past year, five Graduate Fellows created new bodies of work in their Headlands studios: Emily Harter’s first animated short reworks the familiar logic of classic cartoons into something stranger. Eleanor Scholz O’Leary turns the data of early motherhood — sleep, feeding, time itself — into hand-printed topographies. Jonah Reenders’s photographs treat the landscape as a living archive, still bearing traces of military occupation and shifting ecologies. bryant terry’s wall-mounted panel and sound piece trace what the Black Belt has carried across generations. Josephine Devanbu transforms salvaged foam into a landscape for grief and longing.

Final days to see Welcome In This Continuous Loop of Transformation, our 2025-26 Graduate Fellows Exhibition, on view through August 23! Open Thursday-Sunday, 12-5PM.

Headlands Center for the Arts is hiring a Youth Arts Education Coordinator for a three-month contract to help shape the future of youth arts programming at Headlands.

Working across research, community engagement, and program development, this role will connect with various Headlands constituents to explore how Headlands can expand access to its programs for young people. The Coordinator will develop and pilot a framework for future youth education programming that highlights Headlands’ process-oriented mission and legacy.
