Paula Valenzuela Art

Paula Valenzuela Art Hola! I am a mixed media abstract artist and former psychotherapist in Sausalito, CA. My artwork explores the connection of darkness and light within us.

Like therapy–making the unconscious conscious.

A little tour of Arielle Madilian in Sausalito, where a selection of my paintings is currently on view.

What I love about this space is its thoughtful approach to design—bringing together art, vintage pieces, handcrafted objects, and collected treasures that add character and warmth to a home. Every corner feels intentional and inviting.

For Bay Area designers, collectors, and anyone looking for unique pieces with a story, it’s a beautiful destination to explore.

If you’re in Marin, I invite you to stop by, discover the collection, and see the artwork in person.

⏳ Maybe it’s turning 50. Maybe it’s being in a different stage of life—children growing up and leaving home, parents getting older, and so much changing around me.

Time goes fast. I’ve felt that especially over the last decade.

Lately, I’ve become more aware of how precious and limited our time is. How quickly things shift. How important it is to pay attention to what matters.

This small piece is a reflection on that.

⌛️Has your relationship with time changed as you’ve gotten older?

🎨Lately I’ve been working in a different way. It feels looser, more intuitive, and it reminds me of how I used to paint as a child—following movement, flow, color, and instinct more than any fixed plan.

There’s something very freeing in letting go of too many directions and allowing the painting to lead. Right now, the process feels more open to new discoveries.

A new way of working, and at the same time, a return to something very old.

Does that happen to you too?

🪨Like geological formations shaped over time, “Strata” emerged through the accumulation of layers, gestures, and traces that were built up, covered, and revealed again.

I’m drawn to the idea that both landscapes and inner lives carry histories beneath their surfaces. What we see is only part of the story; other layers remain hidden, influencing the whole.

This painting reflects that process of accumulation and transformation, where each mark becomes part of a larger record of time.

That urge to create… ✨

Sometimes it arrives quietly, sometimes all at once.
Either way, I’ve learned to follow it.

“Interior Weave” explores how memories, emotions, and experiences become woven into our inner landscape over time.

Built through layers of fluid acrylics, texture, and repeated forms, the painting suggests the unseen patterns that shape our sense of self. Subtle gold accents emerge from beneath the surface, revealing traces of what remains, even as we change.

“Pacific Spring” and “Green After Winter” were created especially for this exhibition, inspired by thoughts of returning to the Bay Area during springtime.

As I worked on these small paintings from Uruguay, I found myself imagining the hills turning green, longer days, and the particular light that arrives after winter. After more than a decade living there, the Bay Area still feels like home, and these pieces grew from that sense of connection and anticipation.

I’m happy to share them as part of this exhibition and grateful to continue bringing my work back to a place that has shaped so much of my artistic journey.

f you’re in Marin, I invite you to visit in Sausalito and see these works in person alongside their beautiful collection of thoughtfully curated pieces.

🤍The Container and Contained series is deeply personal to me.

It began from thinking about the human need to hold and be held — emotionally, psychologically, and physically. The idea comes partly from my background in psychology, but also from my own life experiences: migration, change, distance, rebuilding, and searching for belonging.

Over time, painting became a kind of container itself — a space where emotions, memories, uncertainty, and transformation could exist without needing to be fully explained.

Many of the repeated forms in the work remind me of shelter, connection, womb-like spaces, or even gestures of protection and care.

I’d love to know if any of these ideas resonate with you in your own way.

🪷Hi again — for those who are new here, I’m Paula Valenzuela, a Chilean mixed media abstract artist based between Montevideo and the San Francisco Bay Area.

My work explores themes of memory, transformation, containment, and the relationship between what is visible and what remains beneath the surface.

After years of developing this body of work quietly, I’m excited to start sharing more of the process, ideas, and new paintings here again.
