This piece captures the ever-changing skies over the Kaanapali coastline of Maui, where the colors as the sun dips below the horizon are almost unreal, and the warm air wraps you up like a hug.

This piece is available on my website FawnBaileyArt.com. For the next week, shipping is on me!

Here’s the photo inspiration for this painting. Nature on its own is breathtakingly beautiful, but there’s also something about reinterpreting it through the human lens and translating it onto a surface that is so captivating.

🎉 To celebrate 4000 followers (yay!!), I thought I’d reintroduce myself and share a new portrait. If you know me, you know I’d way rather be behind the camera than in front, so it’s with some hesitation that I share this photo!

But what I do love is connecting with you, people who love art, create art, and want more beauty and peace in the world ✨

Here’s a little about me, so you know who’s behind the paintings:

🌲I grew up in the Catskills, NY on a small mountain farm with my sisters. After moving between several big cities, I’m lucky to live in Marin County, CA just north of San Francisco, with my husband, our amazing boys, our large, sweet dog, and our feisty cat.

⛰️I love to paint mountains. There’s something magical about them. They feel like home, like a mother, like a reminder about how the earth shifts and changes over time.

🎨 I didn’t go to art school. I took lots of art classes over the years, but science was my focus. I studied Biology at Ithaca College and got my Master of Arts in teaching biology at Johns Hopkins.

🖌️Before becoming a full time artist, I poured my creativity into my roles at the Rainforest Alliance, National Geographic School Publishing, as a teacher, as Editor-in-Chief of a local magazine, and of course as a mom.

🔬 I’m always exploring ways to bring science and art together and feel strongly that art is a way to communicate and educate about science in a truly meaningful and accessible way.

✨ I’m in a perpetual state of wonder about nature, our earth, this universe, and I think art can be a way to connect us to it all and help us understand ourselves in it.

🪶 Other stuff: My pockets are often filled with rocks, finding feathers is a magical gift, hunting for vintage and antique treasures is thrilling, and there’s nothing better than a group of women putting their heads and hearts together! 🩷

🙏 Thank you for supporting women and the arts!

📷 Thank you for the new portrait, !

This piece makes me happy. I don’t know exactly why…if it’s the colors, the shapes, whatever was going on in my mind or in my life while I was painting it.

Sometimes you can’t quite put your finger on it, but when you spend time with a piece of art, something about it stays with you. It’s kind of like when you smell something familiar from your childhood, and memories from your subconscious come flooding back in. Looking at a piece of art can be like that, too :)

🔴 Remembering these three acrylic and collage pieces that found a new home together. I was experimenting with a different color palette for these imaginary landscapes and I love the joy and whimsy in them.

It’s great to have photos to look back on. Paintings are a little like children who have left the nest! You miss them but are so happy they’ve found their place in the world :)

Presence is a paintbrush, too 🖌️

People might assume painting is all motion, and that’s a big part of it. But the real work often happens in stillness. In the times you pause to reflect, when you stop doing and start listening.

My paintings are built through layered inquiry. Nothing is rushed. Every layer from the surface you see to the first marks underneath becomes a part of the story.

If you’re drawn to art that rewards presence and quietly reveals more the longer you give it, you might be one of my people.

This piece lived with me in the studio for a long time before it was complete. It’s part personal diary, part scientific exploration, and part pure color indulgence.

There are so many layers to this painting, with a completely different story underneath. The first layer was a graffiti wall print-making experiment, bold and free. It’s always interesting to watch a painting unfold and let it become what it’s going to be. I love when art is unapologetically itself. I love the creative process that reveals that multiple things can be true at the same time. Art can feel adventurous, be vibrating with energy, and also be peaceful and dreamlike. Art, and people, needn’t fit into any one mould.

When you look at art and react to it, it’s like a mirror, reflecting back to you something about yourself. It stirs up unique feelings and memories in each of us. I think the art you bring into your space should be something that makes you pause and daydream a little. What do you think?
