The Story Behind "Triple Hibiscus & Hummingbird"
Sometimes, a project completely takes over the studio. This table started as an ambitious vision: to transform raw, premium solid black walnut lumber into something that looks completely fluid, organic, and alive.
Every single sweeping line you see here was shaped entirely by hand. I wanted to capture the delicate, overlapping layers of three interlocking hibiscus blooms—tracing the contours of the petals and using high-contrast deep grain lines to highlight the wood’s intense natural figure and shimmering chatoyancy.
If you look closely at the right flank, you’ll find a three-dimensional hummingbird captured mid-flight, frozen right as it dips toward a carved stamen.
But true organic woodwork isn't just about the carving; it’s a delicate dance with engineering. Because solid walnut naturally breathes and shifts with the seasons, the real challenge was ensuring these intricate floral sections would remain rock-solid for generations. Concealed completely out of sight underneath is a network of high-strength internal steel reinforcing rods and heavy-duty, anti-warping metal C-channel supports.
The entire piece rests on a sculptural dual-loop trestle base that mirrors the sweeping curves of the floral canopy above, finally sealed under three coats of hand-sanded polyurethane for a liquid-like satin sheen.
At 40" x 18" x 17", it is no longer just a piece of furniture—it’s a functional sculpture. This table represents countless hours of patience, dust, and passion here at Lumen & Log. It officially comes with its own signed Certificate of Authenticity to register its lineage.
