Local Waves: Nic Panken Nic Panken
Kingston songwriter Nic Panken. Born in Brooklyn, he has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, performing on NPR’s Tiny Desk, at Newport Folk Festival and Austin City Limits as lead singer in NYC band Spirit Family Reunion. He’ll be performing with his full band.

Friday, Oct. 23, experience a veritable supergroup of award-winners who have been performing longer than anyone would guess that they’ve been alive.

East Nash Grass exemplifies the best of what bluegrass has to offer, as being named the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association New Artist of the Year would suggest.

But their breathtaking talent as singers, instrumentalists, and composers is just the beginning. While other acts chase their tail in search of nostalgia, the secret to East Nash Grass lies in their unflinching ability to be themselves.

Artist Spotlight: Brooklyn Rider, performing here at The Local on Oct. 30! Brooklyn Rider

“A string quartet of boundless imagination.” —NPR

Brooklyn Rider is a radically innovative string quartet that reimagines the centuries-old chamber music format for the 21st century. Known for breaking genre boundaries, they effortlessly blend classical music with world, jazz, and folk, frequently collaborating with a diverse roster of global artists.

Inspired by the interplay of light and darkness, Chiaroscuro, the new program of world renowned New York–based string quartet Brooklyn Rider is another testament to the ensemble’s adventurous spirit in combining the well-known with the unusual.

Works by Galina Ustvolskaya and György Ligeti create a stark contrast with Hildegard von Bingen’s 1000-year-old antiphon Caritas abundat in omnia (Love abounds in everything), which serves as a prelude to Schubert’s great G-major Quartet, a masterwork of musical chiaroscuro.

Next Weekend: The Local has never hosted a theatrical experience like “Seeds Under Nuclear Winter: An Earth Opera” before!

Sat. Oct. 17 at 8pm:
This immersive theater experience that conjures lucid dreams and visionary worlds through live sacred and world music, performance art, mythic storytelling, and experimental lighting.

Created and composed by Hudson-Valley-based composer Elizabeth Clark (harp, piano, voice), the performance features:

Founded and led by Nick Corredor, the group channels the aggressive energy of 1970s salsa dura, drawing inspiration from legends like Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colón, Ray Barretto, and the Fania All-Stars.

Rooted in the classic sounds of Alegre and Fania Records, the ensemble blends raw percussion and deep brass with the elegance of woodwinds and strings.
