One week away!! June 4: Emilio Solla + Antonio Lizana Quartet

Latin Grammy winner (2020) and 6-times Grammy nominated, Argentina born and New York based pianist and composer Emilio Solla teamed up for his thirteenth album with flamenco-jazz rising star Antonio Lizana.

Together they have created a highly original piece, El Siempre Mar, where old Argentine folk songs live together with original compositions from both artists.

In this new take on the “cantes de ida y vuelta” (roundtrip songs), these two artists have managed to find a unique and contemporary meeting point between the music of Argentina, the south of Spain, and jazz.

Here, traditional songs by foundational composers such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Astor Piazzolla take new dimensions through the inclusion of modern harmonies and jazz improvisation.

🎶 The beauty and uniqueness of Solla’s arrangements and piano playing is matched by the expressiveness of Lizana’s voice and saxophone.

👉 They are joined by a world-class rhythm section: Jorge Roeder on bass and Ferenc Nemeth on drums, percussion.

Just weeks away on Fri. June 5: Dogo Du Togo & The Alagaa Beat Band

🎶 Singer and guitarist Serge Massama Dogo, aka Dogo du Togo plays Togolese music and ritual mixing alagaa trance music with African pop creating a distinct sound.

Dogo draws from a deep well of sounds from across Togo, including bobobo, kamou, and kpanlogo rhythms, melodies, and scales drawn from Vodun religious rituals and others.

But the bedrock of his band’s sound is the driving alagaa rhythm, a dizzying dance between snare drum and rhythm guitar, modeled on gankogui kinka bells.

Alagaa means “trance” in the Ewe language, and its driving, irresistible beat is transporting.

“When you listen to this music, if you don’t get in a trance, then something’s wrong with you!” Dogo explains. “The alagaa beat brings the energy right away. As soon as you bring it in, it just feels different; it takes you somewhere else.”

🎶 NEXT WEEK!

Saha Gnawa explores North African trance-like states through its intuitive interplay allowing ancestral rhythms and melodies to drift into unknown territories.

Refined via late-night sessions at LunÀtico in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, what emerges is both an authentic performance of centuries-old Moroccan Gnawa tradition and a bold step into new dimensions of sound—where traditional song forms dissolve into ecstatic dance tracks laced with subtle electronics.

Often referred to as “Sufi Blues,” Gnawa is rooted in Morocco’s ancient history.

Over centuries, infectious rhythms and polytheistic spiritual beliefs originating from West African slaves integrated with Islam and the indigenous culture of Morocco, giving birth to a hybrid spiritual sect and musical community.

The lyrics of Gnawa songs are prayers invoking saints and spirits for freedom and liberation.

Gnawa music is revered and treasured throughout Morocco for its soulfulness and healing power.
