CHINA: Exploring the Interior, 1903-04 CHINA: Exploring the Interior,1903-1904 is a travelling exhibit produced in association with the Chinese Room of the Newport (R.I.) In 1903, R.

CHINA: Exploring the Interior, 1903–04 has traveled throughout the United States since 1994, bringing to the public a sense of the people and conditions in rural China through the personal observations and experiences of a young explorer from Maine Public Library and the Maine Humanities Council. Harvey Sargent, a topographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, joined
a Carnegie Institution expeditio

n that took him 1,800 miles across the vast interior of China. Along the way, Sargent documented his observations with photographs of the land and the peasants from which the Chinese Revolution was to come. The core of this exhibit consists of 74 of these original photographs, which have been enlarged and reproduced to museum standards. Also included in the exhibit are the published findings of the geological mission, Sargent’s journal, a map of the expedition, and other memorabilia. Sargent's grandson, Robert M. Sargent, and his great-granddaughter, Ann Sargent Slayton, travelled to China in the fall of 2008, partially re-tracing the route of the 1903-04 expedition. Bob and Ann took many photos, some of which comprise a slide show.

The exhibit will travel to Shady Side Academy, Pittsburgh, in 2011. Over the years, we've been to so many different venues—from the rustic setting of the Bethel (Maine) Historical Society to Maitland Art Gallery to the main hall of the USGS in Reston, Va. Watch for a few images from some of those installations.

Hope everyone has enjoyed this bit of Ann's slide show, put together after our 2008 trip retracing Grandfather's steps. Feel free to share a link to our China page. We'd love to see our China exhibit get the widest possible exposure, and our 2 slide shows as well. Venue suggestions are welcome.

Harvey Sargent’s photo was taken at summit of Nantai Mountain. He spent several days in the Wutaishan area housed at a monastery not far from the monastery on the right. Tayuan pagoda is Tibetan style and stands 150 feet and is hung with 250 tinkling bells.

The Wutaishan area is incredibly beautiful with temples literally cascading down the five mountains surrounding the village. Wu Tai Shan means five holy mountains.

According to Bob and Ann's guide in 2008, at one time there were over 100 temples still active. Most interesting is that he said there are 60 (in 2008). Bob and Ann saw many pilgrims engaged in buddhist ritual prostration and burning of incense. When they asked their guide about religion and communism he replied that he practices many of the rituals, but he isn’t religious.
