Join us TONIGHT!!!!!!

This year's Storytellers' Institute welcomed an extraordinary cohort of visiting fellows: Jamal Ademola, Beatriz Williams, Jaclyn Reyes, Spandita Malik, and Harjant Gill, along with faculty fellow Andrew Ina. Working alongside student fellows and community participants, they have explored questions of storytelling, representation, displacement, memory, justice, and belonging through a wide range of artistic practices.

In a moment marked by censorship, silencing, conformity, and the concealment of truth, When Light Falls explores the tensions between light and shadow, revelation and concealment, obscurity and understanding. Through visual art, photography, film, writing, and multimedia installations, participating artists ask what is lost when we can no longer see clearly, and what becomes possible when artists insist on illuminating what has been hidden.

Here are some awesome pictures from past Golden Acorns! The Golden Acorns has looked different throughout the years, changing location three times, and ever-expanding how it defines its showcased body of work to include the many interdisciplinary forms creativity can take. But one thing that has not changed is the importance of taking a moment to celebrate work that dares to push the boundaries of what we consider media to be, each story having an impact beyond classroom walls, sharing a glimpse of a perspective we may not have thought of before… placing a bow on top of another year full of challenge and growth!

Here all about it! A new MDOCS course called "Alternative Newspaper Studio" is running this Fall semester! 🗞️

This Bridge Experience course emphasizes collaboration and collective authorship, and will treat the newspaper as an artistic and subversive medium. Inspired by artist newspapers, zines, Dada publications, and other alternative media practices, students will have the opportunity to work across text, image, and experimental design to rethink what a newspaper can be.

Students will engage with print, alternative distribution, and collaborative strategies to circulate ideas, challenge dominant narratives, and build collective voice!

Please join Prof. Angus McCullough’s Darning It! students for an exciting group final project entitled Reciprocycle! This is a free bike repair and loan program, using existing, slightly neglected bicycles without a home. 🚲🚲🚲

Tomorrow is the second of two free bike repair workshops that are open to you, to:
a) bring in a bike that needs fixing
b) simply learn about basic bike maintenance on one of our tame horses.

Reciprocycle is a great introduction to learn more about Darning It! (DS 251), which will be offered again this coming Fall ’26 semester – there’s still time to register!

With Fall 2026 course registration underway, this is a great time to highlight all the amazing things happening in MDOCS! MDOCS is more than a program! It’s a creative community, production hub, and home for nonfiction storytelling.

An interdisciplinary academic program, MDOCS offers courses in documentary studies and practice across film, audio, photography, installation, and more. Our courses are open to students of all majors and class years. Taught by faculty who are also working documentary professionals, these courses count toward the Media & Film Studies minor while fostering hands-on, real-world storytelling.

Beyond the classroom, students can deepen their work through independent studies, workshops, master classes, and the summer Storytellers’ Institute residency. Community members with projects in progress can even audit select courses!

Feb. 27–28, MDOCS welcomes for a weekend residency featuring performance, workshops, and the creation of a filmed document of new work on campus.

Founded by Bessie Award–winning artist, Sondra Loring (seen on slide 3), MovingPotential supports individuals impacted by the criminal justice system and those navigating addiction through yoga, meditation, and dance. This residency continues MDOCS’ exploration of storytelling as a form of witnessing and connection across systems of incarceration.

The visit includes classroom workshops with (“Dancing to Success”), (“Embodied Storytelling”), and (“Libraries and Prisons”), as well as hands-on experience for the MDOCS student video production crew in documenting dance for the screen.

Join us in the Dance Theater for a multimedia performance amplifying voices of formerly and currently incarcerated individuals.
