AMERICAN SOUP is an unique theatrical/musical event that traces the American experience from the 50’s to the New Millennium through the eyes of an average American family in Queens, NY and from the perspective of an artist whose career and notoriety spanned the last half of the 20th Century: Andy Warhol. These diverse life stories are woven together with hit tunes from each decade, played by a gro
up of first class musicians who capture the sound and spirit of each song. The action of the play shifts between Andy Warhol’s studio (“the Factory”) where time is unbounded…and an Italian restaurant in Queens from 1961 to the present. AMERICAN SOUP was conceived by Saratoga playwright Mary Jane Hansen at the request of Sweden’s Teater Vastmanland for the visit of the New York State Theatre Institute (NYSTI) in 2006, where the premiere of the show was greeted with standing ovations. In March, 2007, AMERICAN SOUP played at Queens Theatre in the Park where it won the praise of Newsday and enthusiastic audiences. The Saratoga production of AMERICAN SOUP will reunite several of the original cast members, including John McGuire as Andy Warhol and Mary Jane Hansen as Maggie, whom we follow from childhood in the play. AMERICAN SOUP is family friendly entertainment appropriate for ages 10 and up.
