One of the things no one talks about is the fact that you will, in the recovery process, experience more triggers while actively pursuing healing and recovery than you did in survival mode.
Why? Because in survival mode, your nervous system was always vigilant. It was always on alert. It was always bracing for impact.
In healing, your nervous system learns stasis. It learns moments of peace. It learns how to breathe, perhaps for the first time ever.
So when that trigger occurs, it's like whiplash. Your body is pulled out of stasis all the way to that familiar state of panic. It's jarring and terrifying and can potentially make you lose your footing on the path.
The goal, at least in the beginning, isn't “not getting triggered.” It's in doing the work to get yourself to the place where if you are triggered, you trust yourself to sit in the discomfort without falling back into your old ways. It's a moment that will pass.
The work is hard, but totally worth it.
is possible. is possible. is possible.
Thank you for your amazing words, always. 🫰🏽
