I create handmade, one-of-a-kind art using authentic SWFL seashells. Nehemiah 8:10 I have always loved the beach and could sit for hours watching the tide ebb and flow, birds soaring above, feeling the breezes, and listening to waves crash. The beach is a place I feel closer to my Creator. Growing up and living most of my adult life in Virginia, I treasured the times I could visit the vast Atlanti
c Ocean. On family vacations, I found myself walking up and down the surf, hunting for shells to take home to remember those trips. So now I feel incredibly blessed to be living in Southwest Florida and being so close to gulf beaches. My love for the sun, sand and surf has not changed over the years. And, now I get to shell hunt like never before. I have carefully collected a wide variety of seashells from some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in Florida. As my collection grew, I was encouraged to “do” something with them… which began this new journey. I have felt led to create pieces of art based on my Christian faith and love for the ocean. A little about my process…
• After collecting the shells, they go through a multi-step process over the course of several days to thoroughly clean them and bring out their vibrant colors and beauty.
• I spend time creating the word art of some of my favorite Scripture verses and beach-related quotes. After selecting particular fonts and sizing, I tweak them until I feel I get them “just right.”
• The text is then printed on fabric – not paper – which I believe adds further beauty to the final product.
• I take time selecting and arranging particular shells and then they are permanently adhered to the fabric.
• The art is then framed within a glass front shadowbox, and the back “finished” for a more professional look. The final product is one-of-a-kind.
