More comedies by women. More opportunities to get them onstage.

Asolo Rep has joined the Theatre Council of Jokes on Her, a national network of theatres and organizations championing women writing comedy for the stage.

Together, the Theatre Council helps give winning plays opportunities to grow through readings, workshops and other artistic resources.

And the search has already begun! Submissions for the inaugural Jokes on Her Comedy Prize are open through October 1.

40+ characters. Five actors. One legendary Hound. 🔎🐾

The game is afoot with Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a lightning-fast whodunit where solving the case is only half the fun.

And what better season for Sherlock Holmes? In 1927, Arthur Conan Doyle published The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, the final collection of short stories featuring his famous detective.

Nearly a century later, Chari Arespacochaga returns to Asolo Rep following last season’s Primary Trust to put a madcap spin on one of Holmes’ greatest mysteries.

Step right up! 🎪

Nearly 100 years ago, the circus came to Sarasota. This season, that history takes center stage.

Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director Peter Rothstein brings Sarasota’s circus legacy to life with The Day the Circus Came to Town, a brand-new world premiere created with David Darrow (Fiddler on the Roof) and Carla Noack (The Unfriend).
Inspired by interviews with Sarasota’s circus legends, this new docu-musical combines original music, storytelling and breathtaking circus artistry to tell the story of the people and moments that helped shape our city.

Actors. Acrobats. Aerialists. A live circus band. The Day the Circus Came to Town promises to be a theatrical event unlike anything else. More than a world premiere, it’s the story that inspired an entire season.

Peter Amster has been part of the Asolo Rep family as a director, choreographer and performer, with productions including Good Night, Oscar, Murder on the Orient Express, Born Yesterday and The Matchmaker. This season, he returns to direct another family, one with a little more drama.
For the Cavendishes, theatre isn’t just a profession. It’s family business. Between performances, new scripts and romances, there’s never a shortage of drama. But when the family’s youngest diva considers giving it all up for love and a life away from the stage?

Darling, imagine the scandal.

Chicago, 1927. 1:00 PM. Recording session.
And no Ma Rainey.

August Wilson sets Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom over the course of one recording session, with Ma Rainey at its center and a changing music industry just outside the door.

Also around the corner in 1927? Coca-Cola. “Around the Corner from Anywhere” was one of Coca-Cola’s slogans that year and in Wilson’s recording studio, Ma knows exactly what she wants: a cold Coke before she sings another note.

Step into 1927 with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Chuck Smith, Resident Director at both Sarasota’s Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. He brings his deep connection to Wilson’s work to a story about artists, ownership, ambition and who gets to shape the sound of an era.

At every performance of Fiddler on the Roof, there were 40 instruments played by 24 actor musicians. Not a single one of them would have been heard without the work of our sound team. Come along as Asolo Rep’s A1, Carter Erickson , explains what went into making every note heard each night, and how sound shapes the experience for each audience member, even if they don’t realize it.
