Have you ever wondered what a manatee check-up looks like? 🩺✨

Mote recently performed routine health exams on our manatee patients at Mote’s Sea Turtle and Manatee Rehabilitation Hospital.

🌟Our patients are receiving specialized care and ongoing monitoring by expert Mote staff as part of their rehabilitation process. The exam included weighing and measuring the manatees, ultrasounds, bloodwork and more!

Mote’s Sea Turtle and Manatee Rehabilitation Hospital rescues, rehabilitates and releases sea turtles and marine mammals who have been struck by boats, entangled in fishing lines and more. Mote aims to help all patients return to the marine environment and contribute to their populations for years to come. 💙

Mote Science Education Aquarium recently welcomed guide dogs in training from Dogs Inc for a unique training experience. 🐶✨🌊

Welcoming guide dogs in training gives these future service dogs the opportunity to practice important skills in a real-world aquarium setting, while also helping Mote staff, guests and resident animals become more familiar with service animals in the aquarium environment.

During their visit, the dogs practiced skills such as navigating obstacles, staying focused around distractions and showing impulse control, all essential skills for their future careers as guide dogs. 💫

Mote is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible experience for all guests. Accommodating service animals is one of the ways we uphold that commitment and ensure everyone can fully enjoy their experience. 🩵

Mote united with 11 partner organizations in an unprecedented collaborative effort to protect the future of Florida’s Coral Reef during one of nature’s most elusive events, coral spawning.🪸✨

During the first week of August, scientists worked day and night to propagate and conserve the next generation of corals by collecting eggs and s***m, strategically fertilizing embryos that would be most resilient to environmental stressors and cryopreserving s***m to safeguard invaluable genetic diversity for generations to come.

🌟 The scientists ultimately produced 61,000 elkhorn larvae and 47,000 staghorn larvae — an achievement that would have taken decades without human intervention.

🌟Meet Dora the Glider! An essential part of the Ocean Technology team at Mote, Dora goes on missions to give Mote scientists better insights into water quality as an autonomous underwater vehicle.

Mote's Ocean Technology Program works to develop and utilize various forms of cutting-edge tech in partnership with a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific goals to solve problems, streamline processes and monitor the Gulf’s water quality. 🥼🌊

💡Here, the Ocean Tech team is performing ballast testing on Dora the Glider, using a ballast tank to adjust the glider's mass so it stays balanced and stable at various depths in the water column.

Here’s three quick tips to help protect sea turtles and their hatchlings during nesting season!

Sea turtle nesting season officially started May 1 and continues until October 31.

Now that we're over halfway through the season, here are three tips to conserve sea turtles:

🌌 Shield or turn off outdoor lights that are visible on the beach.
🏝️ Fill in any holes that may entrap hatchlings.
🐢 Never touch sea turtles, nests, eggs or hatchlings.

Together, we can help conserve sea turtle populations for generations to come! 💙✨

Mote’s sea turtle activities are conducted under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Marine Turtle Permits 027, 054, 048, 028, 216 and 226.

Last week, Mote’s summer intern cohort presented their research during a poster session at Mote Science Education Aquarium. The session provided these rising stars in marine science the stage to share everything they’ve been working on during their time at Mote. 🔬🌊

Over the summer, Mote interns delved into marine research that ignited their passion for science; they gained hands-on laboratory and field experience and had the opportunity to work alongside senior scientists.

We are so proud of our rising stars and cannot wait to see all that they will achieve in the future! 💫
