We've been thinking about what it actually takes for an artist to follow their intuition.

Morgan Bickel's work moves between photography, watercolor, pastels—whatever the moment calls for. Their work is quiet. Intimate. The kind of images and paintings that feel like someone letting you in.
But that kind of freedom doesn't happen on its own. It takes time. Space. Resources. Someone believing in you before there's anything to show for it.

That's what we're building at Mosaic Movements. And during the Giving Challenge—April 15–16, Noon to Noon—donations up to $100 will be matched to help us support artists, youth arts programs, artist workshops, entrepreneurship development, scholarships, residencies, and creative opportunities in our community.

We'd love for you to join us. Every dollar helps.

The Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation.

There's an artist right now grinning next to what feels like a breakthrough.

You can't see the three failed versions in the trash can just out of frame.

That's the thing about making art. So much of it happens in silence. Not silence like quiet. Silence like unseen. The rehearsal no one attends. The sketch no one approves. The draft no one claps for. The dancer running it one more time after the studio empties. The photographer waiting for the light to change. The filmmaker on take fourteen. The writer staring at a blank page at 1 a.m., trusting something will come.

At Mosaic Movements, we keep coming back to that gap. The one between public celebration and private labor. Because if we only show up for the opening night, we're missing the whole thing. We're missing the chance to make sure the conditions are right before the artist even gets to the starting line.

We believe in honoring the invisible labor—the time, the experimentation, the do-overs—that makes the art possible in the first place. If we only show up at the end, we're showing up late.

So over the next few weeks, we're pulling back the curtain on what the "before" really looks like. For painters. For dancers. For filmmakers. For all of us. We hope you'll sit in that space with us.

Here's what we're wondering—and we'd genuinely love to hear from you, artist or not: What's something in your own life that happens when no one's watching, but makes everything else possible?

Mark your calendars: April 15-16 is the Giving Challenge. Your support during those 24 hours helps us protect the conditions artists need to thrive—not just the applause, but everything that comes before it.

Sometimes the most difficult part of being an artist is not making the work — it’s having the time, space, and resources to do it.

For far too long, the idea of the “starving artist” has been treated as an inevitable part of creative life. In practice, many artists continue to navigate systems where access to resources, networks, and funding remains disparate — particularly for Black and Brown artists, q***r artists, and those holding multiple intersecting identities.

Artists need time, space, resources, and ecosystems of support to sustain and deepen their creative practice.

This commitment helps guide the work of Mosaic Movements. It is also why we are participating in the Spring 2026 Giving Challenge (April 15–16) — a 24-hour community-wide day of giving that supports nonprofits across Sarasota and the surrounding region.

During the challenge, every donation of up to $100 per donor will be matched, helping expand support for programs that create meaningful conditions for artists to develop their work.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll be sharing more about the artists and creative practices your support helps sustain — from residencies and exhibitions to scholarships and opportunities that allow artists to deepen their work.

We invite you to follow along, save the date, and help us continue building the systems of support artists need to thrive.
