My Pop color of this week is a more local pop. Bioluminescence in the Bay Area.

I got to go night kayaking and see the water lit up with electric blue. It was gorgeous. As I was sitting there with my feet in the warm water at 9pm. I looked up and saw millions of stars overhead. And I couldn’t help but sigh.

How. Lucky. Are we.

Where else in the world are you about 4 hours or less away from so many natural phenomenons. It’s gotten to the point where I see a reel about something rare and crazy somewhere in the world, and I’ll just look up where in California it is. And 99% of the time, there actually is something similar in California!

How. Lucky. Are. We.

From lava and glacier geometric weirdness in the Sierras, to caves, and redwoods, and oceans. Mountains and deserts to snowy peaks.

I find myself falling more and more in love with California all the time. The more I can explore, the more I can appreciate.

Shout out to that one lady who was cleaning out her garage last year and listed her paddleboard on fb marketplace for $40. You opened up such a fun door for me and my pup. (Also yes. The pup jumped in. And I was seriously considering joining.)

It always feels good to see the pile of freshly-empty job jackets.

Look at all those NDA’s you’ll see, but never know it was me. 😂

That’s why I always say “if you live in Sonoma County or Marin County, you’ve seen my work. A lot.”

ALWAYS print out the first rough draft.

Trust me.

Cause it’s crazy to hold it for the first time.

But it’s crazier to hold it up next to the final draft about 3 years later.

Someone recently asked me how I recommend going about making a book. What is my design process?

Once you get that manuscript ok, the next step is a rough draft. Printed.

I’ve gotten some flack for it before. Why print it?? Are you a boomer??

But trust me. Not only will seeing your printed manuscript for the first time feel like the accomplishment of a life time. But….

A million years later, when you’re holding your finished product. You’ll also want to hold the first draft.

With all the notes and crossing offs and typos. You’ll want to see how you started. Trust me.

I always recommend printing the first rough draft. There’s no shame in the “I’m trying a thing” game.

About six years ago I made these little watercolor dudes. Well. It’s gouache. Not watercolor. It’s a little bit more vibrant.

I turned them into a playing card set— there are 4 species for the 4 suits. Dogs, birds, rabbits and mice.

They were a HUGE hit for Christmas, and I had a couple decks left over. Well one just sold! Now I only have 1 left. Should I make more??

Being a graphic designer is so fun cause I can be doing the most government, paperwork, back end, forms and files stuff. While also having a gift/fun side project. It helps me stay balanced to do a couple projects here and there that are just silly or fun.

These are going off to their new home tomorrow!

Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!! The first edition of my book is on its way to me. Sometime today. And I’m always SO NERVOUS. I proofed the proofs like 900 times.

I’m hoping to do some product photos. Send one copy off to the Library of Congress, make the sales page.

Maybe cry. Maybe dissociate a little.

This is 4-ish years of really hard work. 167 pages of art.
