This week, we’re excited to welcome Jessica Temple (Jessica Temple) as our Fort Walton Beach Featured Storyteller.

A poet, educator, editor, and longtime advocate for the literary arts, Jessica has spent years helping writers find their voices while cultivating a remarkable body of work of her own. She is the author of Daughters of Bone and Seamless and Other Legends, teaches English and creative writing at Northwest Florida State College, and serves in leadership roles with poetry and writing organizations across the country.

When she’s not writing, editing, teaching, fostering cats, saving sea turtles, or organizing community cleanups, she’s calling Fort Walton Beach home.

Join us on June 24 as Jessica takes the stage to share her story—and then consider sharing one of your own.

One month from today, we’ll celebrate four years of Emerald Coast Storytellers.

Four years ago, we gathered for our very first event with no real idea what would happen next. We just knew we believed in the power of stories and the magic that happens when people come together to share them.

Since then, we’ve filled rooms with laughter, tears, standing ovations, unexpected friendships, brave first-timers, and stories we’ll never forget.

What started as a simple idea has become a community—and that’s because of you.

As we count down to our 4-year anniversary, we thought we’d spend the next month celebrating some of the people, moments, stories, and memories that have shaped Emerald Coast Storytellers along the way.

This is just a small glimpse of the journey so far ✨

In the meantime, we want to hear from you: What’s your favorite Storytellers memory? A story that stuck with you, a person you met, a moment you laughed, cried, or finally found the courage to share your own story—we’d love to hear it in the comments.

We’re so excited to see Junior Emerald Coast Storytellers making its television debut! 🎉

One of the things we’ve always believed is that every storyteller starts somewhere. Creating a space where young people can explore their creativity, build confidence, and share their voices has been a dream of ours from the very beginning.

A huge thank you to Mary Louise Gillis and everyone for helping bring this chapter to life. And to the young writers who have already joined us: thank you for showing up, sharing your ideas, and reminding us that some of the best stories are still being written.

Take a peek at the segment below 👇

Some stories don’t stay in the past.

A conversation you never had.
A dream you put on hold.
A chapter you thought was over.
A loose end that still tugs at you years later.

This month’s Storytellers theme is Unfinished Business — and tomorrow night, we’ll gather at SOWAL House to hear the stories that linger, the questions that remain, and the moments that refuse to let go.

Whether you’re coming to share or simply listen, there’s something special about spending an evening in a room full of people willing to tell the truth.

What happens when a filmmaker steps away from the camera and up to the microphone?

Join us Thursday as we welcome filmmaker, writer, and director Alejandro Soberón () as our Featured Storyteller.

From creating movies on an iPad at eight years old to directing award-winning short films and developing deeply personal projects today, Alejandro’s creative journey has always been rooted in one thing: telling honest stories about complicated people.

We’re looking forward to hearing where that journey takes us this week.

A gentle reminder:

You do not need a finished story.
You do not need a perfect outline.
You do not need to know exactly where you’re going.

You just need a place to begin.

Tomorrow, we’ll gather virtually for our next Spark to Story workshop: Writing the First Draft — designed to help you move past hesitation and onto the page.

Join us from anywhere!

Can’t make it live? You’ll receive the recording plus a one-on-one check-in with literary coach so you can continue the work on your own schedule.

The first draft isn’t about getting it right.
It’s about getting it written.

Tomorrow’s a good day to begin.

We’re turning the page to a new month 📖

June is packed with storytelling nights, writing gatherings, workshops, art, and plenty of reasons to get out of the house and into community.

Tomorrow, we gather again — this time at Craft Bar on the Destin Harbor. A new venue, new stories, familiar faces, and (hopefully) a few first-timers in the crowd too.

You don’t have to get on stage to belong in the room. Come listen, grab a drink and some food, and settle in for the evening.

🎤 Story theme: Unsung Heroes
📖 Featured Storyteller: Ann Lewis

Some stories don’t end when they’re supposed to.

They linger in old voicemails, missed exits, conversations you never had, people you still think about in traffic, and versions of yourself you swore you’d outgrow.

Last night, we loved taking our June theme — Unfinished Business — for a spin at our After-Hours Writing Night, and now we’re even more excited for what’s about to unfold at the mic.

On June 11, we’ll gather inside for an evening of storytelling centered around all the things that never quite wrapped themselves up neatly — with cocktails, conversation, and stories shared at one of the coolest venues around.

You’re ready. We promise.

Not perfectly prepared.
Not fully figured out.
Just ready enough to begin.

Our next From Spark to Story workshop is all about writing the first draft — moving past hesitation, overthinking, and the pressure to “get it right” on the first try.

Through guided exercises and uncensored freewriting, we’ll focus on momentum over perfection and finally getting the words onto the page.

💻 Virtual workshop — join from anywhere

And if you can’t attend live, you’ll receive a recording of the session plus a one-on-one check-in with literary coach to help move your draft forward.

This is not about finishing.
It’s about beginning.
