GK Chesterton Theatre Co. Presents Viva Cristo Rey VIVA CRISTO REY VIVA CRISTO KEY
In Mexico in the 1920's, religion was suppressed. People were forbidden to worship freely. A veil of silence descended.

Severe penalties, from imprisonment to death, were imposed for clandestine worship. Although the repression was widespread, the world took little notice. Into this turmoil entered an unassuming, guitar playing Padre. He set out to minister to his flock, going from house to house, pursued by government agents. In a very short time he would become a world wide figure. His name was Miguel Pro.

More Information About The Play:
Viva Cristo Rey is a play about sacrificial love. It is based on the true story of beloved Mexican hero and Catholic martyr, Blessed Fr. Miguel Pro. The setting of the play is 1920's Mexico during a time of religious persecution. Under the anti-Catholic legislation of Mexican president Plutarco Calles, tens of thousands of Mexicans suffered imprisonment and or death. Some opposed to Calles began the Cristero War, or La Cristada. Although not a Cristero, Fr. Pro's final words, “Viva Cristo Rey”, placed him as a spiritual leader during this dark period of history.

“After many years of reading the life of Bl. Miguel Pro and his brave effort to minister to all Catholics during the most-fierce persecution Mexico has ever seen, I found myself in complete awe of the work of art Viva Cristo Rey truly is. “Although I have read the story of Fr Miguel Pro and his martyrdom, no book compares with watching the play performed by the GK Chesterton Theatre Company. Absolutely riveting, I was on the edge of my seat. When it was all said and done, my faith was renewed, revived and taken to another level. Saw the performance last night. Really wonderful production - everything about it was a pleasure - acting, directing, staging. And the Miles Playhouse is such an awesome space for the audience. Very happy to have seen Viva Cristo Rey, and also to know about a time in Catholic history that I was previously unaware.

Thank you for a great evening! I will definitely recommend this production to the people I know who could not make it last night.

All the best,

"As I began saying the rosary and contemplated on the first joyful mystery, thoughts of Miguel Pro entered my mind. I reflected on how nothing is impossible for God. I saw a time in history where people like the Presidente of Mexico who would stop at nothing to see Catholicism die; to see darkness and fear run amuck and consume so many unfortunate lives. I thought about our Blessed Mother and how ardently She wanted to plant seeds of faith, hope, and charity into the fertile soil of Her children's hearts. In the play, "Viva Cristo Rey," (Long Live Christ) I could vividly see how Blessed Miguel Pro empathically said, "Yes" to him bearing life of Christ..... adentro de su corazon (deep inside his heart). In doing so, he received many graces through the intercession of the Virgin of Guadalupe. She helped him to resusitate the dying and those who were already (spiritually) dead by secretely giving the Holy Sacraments to the people. What I appreciated so much about the play was not only the story about this holy man's journey to save souls and get to heaven, but how breathingly beautiful it was depicted on stage; by the authenticity of events, it's production, the timing/pacing of scenes, the lightening, and the cast.... who were totally commited to the role of their character. I believed the play accurately protrayed how much Jesus loves families; how much the Mexican families adoran a sus familias- and in doing so, their actions exemplify just how much they love our Lord too. In a time in history now where our society still has a distorted definition of courageousness and strength, Blessed Miguel Pro role modeled real bravery and honor through the virtue of humility. Just like the words of our Holy Mother at the Annunciation, Blessed Miguel also spoke to the angel of God with arms wide open. Upon entering (eternal) life, his heart proclaimed, "You see before you the Lord's servent, let it happen to me as you have said." Thanks to this play directed by Angel Duran, I know now it's my turn to the same." Kate B. - Long Beach, CA
