Craig Krull Gallery

Craig Krull Gallery The gallery was established in 1991 as Turner/Krull Gallery in West Hollywood. The inaugural exhibition, “Photographing L.A. art history. Brittin’s work.

During the gallery’s three years on Melrose Avenue, the program was exclusively photo-based. Architecture,” demonstrated Krull’s interest in the cultural history of Southern California and also marked the beginning of his representation of noted L.A. artists such as Julius Shulman, James Fee, and Edmund Teske. The program also included exhibitions of prominent photographers whose work had not been

widely exhibited in the area, including, William Eggleston, Robert Adams and Frederick Sommer. Curatorial projects included, “Action/Performance and the Photograph,” a group exhibition examining the relationship of still photography to performance art. In 1994, Craig Krull became one of the founding galleries at the new Bergamot Station Art Center. Since that time, the gallery has expanded its scope, no longer exclusively photo-based, it now represents major Southern California painters and sculptors such as Peter Alexander, Dennis Hopper, Llyn Foulkes, Astrid Preston, Dan McCleary and Don Bachardy. Sharing the poet Gary Snyder’s belief that, “our place is part of what we are,” the gallery is characterized by “place oriented” work, that which demonstrates a relationship between the artist and their environment or cultural milieu. Curatorial efforts reflecting this interest included, “Photographing the L.A. Art Scene: 1955-1975,” which explored that seminal period in L.A. The gallery has also re-introduced artists such as photographer, Charles Brittin, an important chronicler of the Beat Generation. For this exhibition, Krull collaborated with Walter Hopps, producing the first catalogue of Mr. The gallery is divided into three interconnected exhibition spaces of differing sizes. Exhibitions may focus on a single artist, but are more often comprised of two or three concurrent “solo” shows that explore complimentary themes, issues, or aesthetics. In fact, as simple as it may sound, beauty has always been a fundamental aspect of the gallery’s program.

Today is Marilyn Monroe's 100th birthday.
Richard C. Miller was one of the first photographers to hire her as a model. Image one is Miller with 19 year old Norma Jeane Dougherty. Two is her signed model release.
Four is a carbro print of Norma Jeane in her wedding dress from her first marriage to James Dougherty when she was only 16 (an arranged marriage to avoid being sent to an orphange as her foster parents moved away.) Another version of this image appeared on the cover of Personal Romances magazine in 1947. Images 6 and 7 were a little later when Miller a companied her for an audition. I wonder, why the man in the last photo has his fingers on her neck. When the young Norma Jeane came over for dinner at Miller's home with his wife and three daughters, she told the family that she would be a big star some day.
All of these photographs are original vintage prints and can be viewed at the gallery.

We lost a soulful flame of light, love and free spirit. As his partner Sue Henger said, the passing of George Herms is "one big loss for mankind." If you want to know what the poetic heart of the Beat Generation was all about, if you want to know what it was that they passed down to the hippies and flower children of the 60s, you need to look no further than George. As Jack Kerouac said, the Beats were often misinterpreted, and were really about "tenderness." Instead of a signature, Herms often "signed" his work with four rubber stamps of the letters,
"L O V E" in the four corners of his 2-D works. I was lucky to have collaborated with him on many projects and exhibitions, including a few shows of his collages which were made from his old correspondance envelopes that The Getty tossed out as they sifted through his archives. George, being the great salvage artist that he was, repurposed these envelopes into lovely collages as sensitive and touching as the scraps of envelopes that Emily Dickinson penciled her thoughts upon. In his later years, George never stopped combining elements.
Image 10 is just one among dozens of sculptures I saw on a recent visit that he made with the blue caps of Ensure that he drank daily for his health. Image 2 is a rubber stamped envelope I made just a couple days before he died. Image 3 is George with pals Russ Tamblyn, Dean Stockwell and Dennis Hopper at my gallery (for a show of Stockwell and Foulkes). Image 4 is a "map" that the Whitney Museum created showing all the connections between the West Coast Beats."
I truly loved George Herms. The thought of him dancing on tables with an egg carton for a crown as Llyn Foulkes played his Machine at Track 16 will forever live in my mind as the raw, authentic spirit of what it means to be alive.

Today, I met with Branislav Jakovljević, professor of performance studies at Stanford, along with the Dark Bob. Yesterday, Branislav participated in an important series of talks at the Getty as part of their initiative, High Performance: A Two Year Conference (2025-2027) dedicated to High Performance magazine, the Los Angeles based publication (1978-1997) that was the first international magazine devoted exclusively to performance art. The project is organized jointly by the Getty Research Institute, the Performance Art Museum, Highways Performance Space, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and 18th Street Arts Center.
Image 2 is Bob & Bob on the cover of High Performance in 1985.
Our 50 year survey of Bob & Bob continues through May 9.
