Baby Bird, 24”x30”, oil on canvas

I am so excited to share that tomorrow I will begin my MFA in painting at Boston University Boston University MFA Painting!

I am incredibly thankful to everyone who has helped me reach this point in my artistic journey: to my family, friends, and The Art Department of Santa Monica College mentors Marc Trujillo, Amy MacKay, Emily Silver, Kim Garcia, and Nathaniel Donahue. And especially to Karen Golden, Steve Rachwal, and Hyla Rachwal for your never ending love, care, and support. Like all baby birds, it is now time for me fly from the nest. I cannot wait to begin this new adventure!

Some more photos of people in the nest.

This womb-like refuge was designed to be a safe setting for people to relax and find comfort in their bodies.

Nesting ~ branches, palm fronds, wood, vines, leaves, bark, quilt batting, memory foam, paper, fabric, leather, yarn, and wool ~ 5’6” x 5’6”

This installation invites viewers to sit inside on the cozy, memory foam floor, surrounded by the sound of a beating heartbeat, as they once heard in their own mother’s womb. The sculpture was constructed by instinctually gathering and assembling natural and found materials throughout my community–just as a bird might do when building their own nest. This womb-like refuge is a safe setting for people to relax and interrogate the spaces they build to contain their emotions and comfort their bodies.

Mother Clock

A button accompanies each time of day, which the viewer can press to hear a ~20-second audio clip of the grandfather clock in my childhood home, overlaid with my mom’s voice. It was really special to be able to collaborate with my mom on this piece. Thank you Karen Golden for always being there for me.

Mother clock ~ wood, acrylic paint, quartz clock mechanism, shells, and custom voice recorders ~ 1’6”x1’x5’2”

This multimedia, synesthetic sculpture incorporates sight, sound, and touch to bring the viewer into my childhood home and the unique relationship between me and my mother. It reimagines a traditionally masculine object in the likeness of my nurturing mom, incorporating themes of memory, nostalgia, and joy. A button accompanies each number on this clock, which the viewer can press to hear a ~20-second audio clip of the grandfather clock in my childhood home, overlaid with my mom’s voice, inviting them to join in on a different activity from my youth. This surrealist structure is 5’2”, the height of my mother, whose hand is also included as the little hand of the clock.

The last slide includes a sneak peak of the recordings.

Golem Rising, 8″ x 24″, finger painted oil on canvas

This painting is based on the Jewish folktale of the Golem, a mythological creature crafted from clay or mud to serve its creator, who eventually becomes uncontrollably powerful. In this self-portrait, I am the Golem, looking down at my hands and realizing the power that I hold as a human and artist.
