Grave Mistakes opens tonight! Congratulations to this cast and crew!

A quirky romance and haunted-house mashup! Meet Ray, a book editor who’s head over heels for his coworker and author Molly. But as they struggle to meet a book deadline, chaos ensues when a bizarre landlord and ghosts hunter burst in with plans to transform their cozy work space (which may be haunted) into a paranormal tourist attraction. Will love and terror collide in a hilarious explosion?

SMCT wants you!!

Come join our script reading committee and you can read the shows that we may do for our 69th season!

We are looking for a wide range of folks - young, old, classical, contemporary, rock, opera, all the categories to help with our rubric sheets. The group will have about 25 shows to read by December; fill out their personal score cards and meet as a group to discuss the shows presented.

That data will be collected and given to our SMCT board of trustees in 2027 where they will go over all of the notes. With that info, they will decide what shows fit our 2027-2028 season!

SMCT patrons! We want to hear from you!

From now until August 31, 2026, we will have our submission window for scrips to be considered for our 69th season!
Please follow the link in out bio titled ‘Script Submission for Season 69” to find out more.

Some information before going in:

All shows must be available for licensing, or they may not be chosen. (Local written plays: authors will need to have a conversation with the board about fees).

If you plan to direct, your script will have a higher chance at getting chosen. All new SMCT directors must shadow direct an upcoming production prior to directing their chosen show.

If you plan to direct, you must be a current member for submission and Season 69. Please reach out to us privately on how to do so.

The script submission form will remain open until August 31, 2026. Once all submissions are received, script committee members will receive links to each script as well as a rubric to use while assessing. We will also aim to meet in person a few times for table reads between September and December; pending member availability. In January, results from our rubric will be tallied and presented to the Board at the January 2027 meeting.

Auditions for BAT BOY The Musical

• Sunday July 12th at 2p
• Monday July 13th at 6p

Performs: October 9th - 25th
Fridays 7p
Saturdays 7p

Please prepare 16-32 bars of any musical theater or popular song, preferably in the rock, gospel or country genre that highlights your vocal style and range.

Please bring a smart device for playing accompaniment as there will be no accompanist at the audition.

Following the singing auditions, you will be taught a brief dance routine to execute in small groups.

This will conclude the day.

Callbacks will be held Monday, July 20th from 6:00 – 9:00pm. We will be reading scenes from the script, as well as singing brief sections from selected numbers.

Character Breakdown

PRINCIPALS

Bat Boy / Edgar: Tenor. The titular protagonist. He undergoes a massive, tragic transformation from a feral, cave-dwelling creature to a gentle, civilized, bookish boy, and finally a monster.

Meredith Parker: Mezzo-Soprano. The local veterinarian's wife and a deeply empathetic mother figure who takes Edgar in and teaches him.

Dr. Thomas Parker: Tenor. The local vet, father to Shelley, and husband to Meredith. He becomes increasingly hostile and threatened by Edgar's presence.

Shelley Parker: Soprano. Dr. and Mrs. Parker's confident, curious, and headstrong teenage daughter who falls in love with Edgar.

FEATURED / SUPPORTING ROLES

Sheriff Reynolds / Delia / Charley: Baritone. Local law enforcement and townsperson.

Mrs. Taylor / Roy / Reverend Billie Hightower / Institute Man: Tenor. The fiercely protective mother of the Taylor family, combined with a traveling revival preacher and various townsfolk.

Rick Taylor / Lorraine / Mr. Dillon: Tenor. One of the teenagers who discovers Bat Boy in the cave, doubling as townsfolk.

Ron Taylor / Maggie / Clem: Baritone. Another local teenager and member of the Taylor family.

Ruthie Taylor / Ned: Mezzo-Soprano. A young teenager from the local Appalachian town, doubling as a rancher or townsfolk.

Pan / Daisy / Bud / Doctor: Tenor. A mythological Greek satyr encountered in the woods, doubling as various townsfolk
