PRO TIP: Don’t rush the cure.

You’ve prepped the surface, mixed your Pond Shield, and applied your coating. Now comes one of the most important steps: patience.

Pond Shield requires a minimum of 24 hours to fully cure before introducing water under the specified curing conditions.

Filling your pond too soon can compromise the finished coating.

Give your project the time it needs before putting it into service.

Good results are worth the wait.

Good prep sets the foundation for a successful Pond Shield application.

Surface Prep helps clean and etch concrete and masonry surfaces before applying Pond Shield—and Stephen put it to work on his project:

“Prepped just before Pond Armor — worked great on smooth and porous surfaces.”

Proper surface preparation matters. Take the time to get the substrate ready before you coat.

Spot something that needs attention? Fix it before adding water.

Pinholes, thin spots, small gaps, or exposed substrate can sometimes show up during your final inspection. The important part is catching and correcting them before the pond goes into service.

KB-07: Touch-Up & Corrections walks through what to look for, how to make corrections within the recoat window, and what to do if that window has already passed.

A careful final inspection now can help prevent problems later.

Don’t guess. Measure.

Proper coating thickness is an important part of getting the best performance from Pond Shield. During application, aim for a minimum wet film thickness of 10 mils — approximately the thickness of three sheets of paper.

Checking your thickness as you work can help you catch thin areas before the coating cures.

Want a closer look at proper coating thickness? Check out KB-05: Pond Shield Wet Film Thickness Guide in the Pond Shield Knowledge Base.

Don’t add water just yet.

Once Pond Shield has been applied, take the time to inspect the finished coating for complete, even coverage. Look over the surface one section at a time and address any areas that may need attention before putting the project into service.

Check out this awesome fountain from the Pond Armor Vault! In this situation, the owner wanted a more formal looking pond and chose black slate tile. Since the slate is porous to begin with it was decided that Pond Shield Clear would be used as the final coating to completely seal all of the tile. Any coating that was exposed above the water line was scuffed with a red Scotchbrite pad to dull the coating and give the final finish a more natural look.
