Look on the back of many fe**sh carvings, and you'll find a medicine bundle — arrows with beads of shell, turquoise and coral, or bundles of parrot feathers, bound to the animal as an offering. On this Royston turquoise bear, the bundle is part of the carving's power.

Bisbee Blue comes from the copper workings near Bisbee, Arizona — high blue color, from sky blue to a dark lavender blue, threaded with deep chocolate-brown to black webbing. Most of it surfaced during open-pit mining at the Lavender Pit, and in the 1950s and '60s miners known as "dumpers" carried it out in their lunch boxes. The mine has been closed since the early 1970s, so anything new has been scavenged from the old dumps — which makes genuine Bisbee harder to find every year.

Kingman turquoise comes from the Mineral Park Mining District near Kingman, Arizona – first mined by Native Americans as part of the most extensive prehistoric turquoise workings in the state, then rediscovered for modern production in the 1880s.

Its high blue color became such an industry standard it's simply called "Kingman Blue."

Royston turquoise comes from a Nevada district of three mines, the main one known as The Royal Blue.

Its colors run from deep green to rich light blue, set off by a heavy brown matrix; often both colors appear in a single stone.

Today's operators process most of their output into finished cabochons and release very little rough material, which has pushed prices up in recent years.

White mother of pearl comes from the warm seas of the Philippines and Indonesia; the best black mother of pearl — prized for its violet-to-green iridescence along the shell's lip; comes from Tahiti.

Coral has been worn as jewelry and carried as an amulet since before the time of ancient Egypt; some believed it could relieve melancholy and worry. TradeRoots sources natural red Mediterranean coral, along with coral from the Sea of Japan, for beads used in traditional Navajo jewelry.

TradeRoots produces and procures Zuni fe**shes and Ramah Navajo carvings in gemstone materials, directly from their source. A fe**sh is traditionally an animal carving that houses the spirit of that animal; some are embellished with a "heartline," an inlaid line running from mouth to heart.
