Join us for an online talk with Eames Demetrios (Chairman of the Board, Charles & Ray Eames Foundation) exploring the friendship between Georgia O’Keeffe and her creative contemporaries, Charles and Ray Eames. O’Keeffe and the designers were lifelong friends, and O’Keeffe even collected numerous pieces of furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames for her homes in New Mexico.

Explore “Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country” before it closes on November 1, 2026.

Through storytelling and cultural exchange, “Tewa Nangeh/Tewa Country” invites visitors to explore the past, present, and future of Tewa land. In this piece by John Garcia Sr. (Kha’p’o Owingeh / Santa Clara Pueblo), a family prepares for a journey south on an autumn morning.

“Migration has always been a part of Tewa peoples’ belonging to the landscape,” reflects Garcia. “Here I’m showing the preparations that are taking place as they are migrating South…The colors I put in there as the sky are colors that we have in our Tewa country this time of the year—the fall season.”

“The Mountain calls one, and the desert—and the sagebrush—the country seems to call one in a way that one has to answer it.” – Georgia O’Keeffe to Dorothy Brett, 1930.

Georgia O’Keeffe spent her first summer in New Mexico at patron of the arts Mabel Dodge Lujan’s home, which was the center of the bustling Taos art scene. Upon her return to the area in 1930, O’Keeffe opted for a quieter stay. She visited author and socialite Marie Garland and avant-garde filmmaker Henwar Rodakiewicz at their H&M Ranch in Alcalde. At the H&M Ranch, the landscape inspired O’Keeffe to paint a series of views of the jagged mountains and vibrant hills across the Rio Grande.

🍂 If fall were a painting.

Today marks the end of summer and the first day of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

While exploring the woods near the Stieglitz family retreat at Lake George, Georgia O’Keeffe often gathered leaves in a variety of shapes, colors, and textures, inspiring more than twenty artworks between 1922 and 1931. In her paintings, O’Keeffe enlarged the small leaves until they approached abstraction, focusing on intricate details and magnifying the vibrant beauty she observed in nature.

The mid-20th century ushered in a new era of commercial aviation. With more access to international travel, Georgia O’Keeffe began traveling across the globe, visiting nearly 50 countries across nearly every continent.

In this 1974 photograph, O’Keeffe sits atop a camel during a visit to Morocco.
