Artist Thais Mather talks on our podcast “A Creative Excuse” about her current show: MISS UNIVERSE.

The work in the show plays a dual role, evoking the hyper-feminine performance of pageant queens and hinting at the feminine connection to the eternal. 

“I’ve been thinking a lot about femininity, myths, cosmic mothers, and being vilified by your own creation…I think it’s pretty heavy hitting feminist work.

Hecho a Mano is pleased to host the Santa Fe launch of Harp in Hand: Poems of Ireland (3: A Taos Press, 2026) the debut full-length collection from Irish/American poet Kate O'Neill, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The launch is free and open to the public.

Harp in Hand traces the enduring pull of home place, weaving together the landscapes of Ireland—Connemara, the streets of Galway, the ancient bogs and holy wells—where the veil between worlds thins and the ancestors rise to meet the present. Moving from the lilt of the harp to the steady beat of the bodhrán, it asks what it means to belong and to return—to the song carried within the Irish heart.
The evening opens with roughly half an hour of poems and live music, followed by time to mingle and have books signed. Musicians will continue to play throughout the reception, with a program spanning harp, guitar, mandolin and banjo.

O'Neill holds dual United States and Irish citizenship. Her poems have appeared in anthologies and journals internationally, and her letterpress chapbook Emulsifying Fires: Ansel Adams in New Mexico (Dreaming Dog Books, 2022) was produced as a handmade edition of 100.

Cast from Thais Mather’s own hands, these two cup gently toward each other the way you would to receive a gift. The glass holds the shape of the hands that made it, open and a little bit tender, with light passing through the space between them. In our podcast with Thais she called each day “a crazy gift,” and this piece reflects that vulnerability in the gesture and material. Cast in an edition of 4, available on our site or on view in the gallery.

Max Lehman’s “The Hope for Environmental Renewal” is a small skeleton with happy daisies growing out of its head, which makes it a bit of an outlier in Ancestral Androids, though it shares the show’s premise that clay outlasts the civilizations that made it. Lehman imagines his sculptures as discoveries from a distant future, objects “between relic and machine, artifact and fossil,” whose makers are gone and whose stories we get to finish ourselves. Daisies seem like a reasonable guess about what comes next.

One of the flower ladies from Thais Mather’s Miss Universe, a series of watercolors in which female forms open onto a glimpse of the cosmos. The title nods to pageant queens and to the feminine connection to something eternal, and the work draws on the emptiness of space and the way grief can crack a person wide open. Thais describes the figures this way: “They’re really beautiful, and they’re extraordinarily creepy.” Femininity has run through her practice across sculpture, printmaking, painting, and installation since a girlhood spent loving all things girl.
