Three works that impacted me the most while painting in Italy . National Museum of Umbria, Assisi Italy and The monastery where St Francis lived and prayed in the mountains near Assisi. Plein Air on board. It's the first residency where I felt my work deeply.

My time in Italy at Umbria Contemporary Art residency. Truly the best experience in my art career. The knowledge, the professors from Alfred University and the amazing talent exceeded my expectations. Thank you Kevin Wixed, Erika Hess and David Voros and staff for a lovely adventure. I can't even begin to post all the pics. The work I did put me on a whole other level. Next year, I will back to teach in Italy.

Off to Umbria Contemporary Arts Academy Art in Residence on Sunday where I will post a different plein air work daily.

Van camping led me to this scene. Unfortunately my puppy was sick all night so I painted this on two hours sleep and in the early morning. Because I forgot most everything on this trip, I also forgot solvents and neutrals. I had four tubes of paint and some Chelsea brush cleaner which can act as a solvent. I mixed from red, blue, and yellow and white. Knowing that these colors cancel one another, I could get very close to a black as my neutral. Calming the chroma with white and embracing the curves with chroma. Good lesson and fun.

Working with different angles of light is now a new challenge. Trying to stay with the same value and use chroma as the highlights. I enjoy this scene because it creates drama and mystery. I’m also adding a little more chroma color to this work. I think it lends more to feeling of joy I had after a long drive through mountains and desert as the light folded into darkness from the sun setting.

I believe this work has come to a stopping point. This was an amazing color theory exercise. I believe I achieved 2 thru 10 chroma and I now have more control over the hues without them getting out of control and being too saturated. I can pick hues that I want to use versus having to use.

I haven’t been able to paint the last two days but I think it’s coming along nicely. Color theory is compromised. I like contrast and drama. Not sure how to get away from that but the values speak for its self.

Detail. Work in progress. Oil on panel- 24”x18” I took a color theory class with my friend and painter, a world class color theorist, Graydon Parrish and it really is a journey. I’m certainly no expert yet at hue + value over chroma but do I understand that value has to come first and valuing oneself is a natural response to knowledge. It’s actually a long grueling process because one can’t rush. I made up this painting based on my memories of traveling back to Santa Fe from the Tucson gem show with Graydon. He drove and I breathed in these scenes. I keep building on the memory and can’t wait to put the Saguaros in this work. More paint strokes now using 5 thru 10 Chroma. A peaceful less dramatic piece. Practice makes everything better.
